1993 Honda Prelude

Hey Everyone,

New here so bare with me and new to Honda Preludes.

I have a 1993 Honda Prelude Si 2.3L H23a Engine
I picked it up as a project.
It was said to have a bad head gasket and the head was cracked. I was lucky and found a good used head and did the timing belt while everything was apart. Those were the major things I have done everything else was minor stuff. I got it running and since I live in CA I had to get it smogged it passed everything but Ignition timing.

Now I have a shop repair manual and have to chase this problem down that I'm about to explain.
I can not get the timing where it needs to be at 15 degrees BTDC

- I have double checked TDC with the cams and Flywheel mark. Everything checks out.
- I'm not getting any codes
- I have the Right Distributor(used and was the one that came with it when bought)
- the only way I can get 15 degrees is BTDC is idling it up around 1200-1500RPM
-I jumped the service connector like it says to set the timing

Nothing seems to work I can not get it to idle around 700 and have 15 degrees BTDC.

Do I have a bad Distributor? Or MAP sensor?
Any suggestions? Anyone have this happen to them?

Re: 1993 Honda Prelude

You set the ignition timing with a timing gun and rotating the dizzy forwards/backwards to advance/retard the timing.

Re: 1993 Honda Prelude

Yeah I know that genius. I am not getting the proper timing it needs all I can get is 7 degrees and I need 15. I have double checked it is properly set at tdc. I did everything by the book, replaced parts, cleared all the codes, etc . Any suggestions other than using a timing light and turning the distributor backward or forward for a reason why I'm not getting the proper timing?

Sounds like a tuffy.

Hail Mary question si lude...
How's thar egr?

Service manual; does it tell you how to check the map sensor?

How old is your cap, rotor, plugs n wires?

Does it idle at 700?

Re: 1993 Honda Prelude

Yeah it has been tough. Not sure about the EGR I'm in the process of going through the manual and doing test on the sensors to see if one is bad or not sending a signal. Manual says the Distributor with all its sensors and the map are related to basic timing. I put in a brand new distributor in not to long ago in hopes that it would fix my problem but it hasn't as well as new plugs. Wires aren't very old.

She idles around 700rpm, but does seem to search at sometimes.

When the service connector is jumper is the timing suppose to be different from when not jumper. I know other cars I have worked on have a similar way of setting timing but there was a difference in timing because you were setting the initial then when you were done the computer took back over.
