HELP TRANSMISSION problems d4 problems

Hi guys please help me understand what's wrong and how to go about this problem. So two days ago I bought a 2001 prelude (don't know the generation or if there is a generation for my year ) we'll this is my second car so I don't know much about cars anyways let's get to the problem. So when I bought it I thought you where supposed to drive with the d3 option I thought d4 was just an overdrive. And I would just just shift it in to d4 on the freeway. So I did some googling about the difference between d3 and d4 and found out d3 is for mountains and and city driving.... And d4 is for everything else. So I tried using d4 instead of d3 but my car won't shift outta first when it's in d4 ....... Scary right. However you can use d3 and when it's trying to shift in to 4th (around 3000 rpm maybe more ) you can shift it in to d4 and it'll slip in to 4th .... So why is it My car will shift past 1st in the mountain gears but not in the d4 option. Is it the transmission just shot ? Or is there something simple to this problem . Did Google give me bad info are u supposed to shift from d3 and d4 ? It's an auto that doesn't sound. There is no blinking light or anything when you try to use d4

Re: HELP TRANSMISSION problems d4 problems

Use D4 for everyday regular driving, no manual shifting required, don't touch the lever after you put it in D4.
Don't want to confuse you but, your not using SS mode are you?

When you put the car in D4 your actually starting off in 1st.(if your stopped) The TCM (transmission control module) will shift gears automatically for you, upshift and downshift.

you've got a 5th gen Prelude.

Re: HELP TRANSMISSION problems d4 problems

i was having trouble w/ my transmission slipping, i know different from yours, but i did have an auto. If you are savvy enough to troubleshoot use this guide

5th gen online manual

its a zip file for a helms. It troubleshoots problematic areas for automatic 5th gens. IMO i would swap out to a manual if you have the money and time, i found that the 5th gen auto transmission has alot of problems...

Re: HELP TRANSMISSION problems d4 problems

And I'm still wondering this . Why we'll my car shift past first in d3 but not d4 :/ my friend told me drive it how you are till it breaks and save up for a new tranny. And am I messing anything up driving it in d3 and switching it to d4 when it's trying to go in to 4th gear ? And what's sport mode ? Does every prelude have that ? Yes I know I'm newbie to this car but any info helps please . Is my tranny ****ed or is there a simple fix to this if anyone's had this same problem or something similar please letme know I live this car and wanna have it for a while it's nice as hell

Re: HELP TRANSMISSION problems d4 problems

Update*** tranny light came on :( not good so how hard is it to change the tranny to a manual ? I was gonna take it to a mechanic before I decide it needs a new tranny because I could be wrong but I doubt it

Re: HELP TRANSMISSION problems d4 problems

the mechanic will always say that you need either a new tranny or rebuild...I was quoted lowest $1200 for a rebuild...but thats here in FL, highest was 3000, but it was still going to be an auto tranny.

But i wanted to swap and swapping to a manual may seem hard...but its not if you follow the right steps and think of it as lego's, just taking it apart and putting it back together and adding a few extra parts....best analogy i can come up with.

I did it myself and i am a noob...

Transmission: $250-Craiglist
Hired a mechanic: $400 (Basically i wanted him to only help me as needed so he taught/watched me take it apart and put it together, giving advice along the way)

All other parts: about $1000

Total was about: $1730 - decided to install push to start feature

Total time: (with parts all gathered) a weekend...

Follow this guide

http://www.preludepower.com/forums/s...d.php?t=302157

and the helms manual to the T.

Good luck, or if you have money...but don't have time; find a reputable mechanic
