Hard Shifting into 1st and reverse

Ok so i swapped out my auto 5th gen to a manual and its been about a year or two since. Now its starting to get hard to shift into first and reverse. I have an M2S4 or M2U4...cant remember right now...sorry but it belonged to the prelude SI 4th gen.

Tried changing out my slave, it helped but not that much, no visible leaks on master cylinder either. I'm hoping that the worst case scenario here is my clutch, not my transmission.

Haven't checked my cables yet but i plan to.

I know that my syncro's are probably worn but w/ out starting the car i can move it into all gears fairly easily.

I've been searching for hours on the internet and on here, along w/ other blogs and no luck. I found one link
hard to shift in first gear (reverse also)

but the last post was like 9 years ago...the car is probably dead. Can anyone lead me to a post on here about this issue w/ a fix?

Anyone have this happen or XP in this arena w/ an answer or at least a link to a guide i can follow for troubleshooting?

Re: Hard Shifting into 1st and reverse

What if you shift into 2nd or 3rd before trying 1st n reverse.

My old Ford does what you describe. Especially when it's cold out.

I go for 2nd first before even trying for 1st gear out of habit. Sometimes 3rd before trying reverse.
My 97 usually requires me to try other gears before going into reverse.
Been doing that with nearly every stick vehicle I've ever owned/driven. Old timers told me it's the sycros and/or cables when I began driving dump trucks years ago (non hydraulic clutches)....

Re: Hard Shifting into 1st and reverse

i do that too...but i'm not driving it for now just in case something else is wrong...i'll change out the master cylinder sometime this week...i now remember that this happened to me before...(don't know why i forgot, maybe i'm old)...but i changed the master cylinder and it helped alot when it was getting hard to shift gears...are there any aftermarket MC that are tougher than the ones that autozone or advanced sells?

Re: Hard Shifting into 1st and reverse

when you are trying to shift into first or reverse, does it go if you slowly let out the clutch a little bit? when it won't go into reverse, try to shift to another gear and then try to go into reverse again

Re: Hard Shifting into 1st and reverse

Try horsepowerfreaks.com or kingmotorsports.
I honestly do not know if anyone does... but it seems somebody would make a sturdier unit for racing...

Check out 71dsp members ride thread... he has a circle track car going. It is bad@$s to say the least.

Re: Hard Shifting into 1st and reverse

if u changed ur slave, it might be ur master. i kinda had the same problem and my slave and master were both shot, good luck hopefully its just that and make sure u get all the air out the lines, it took me forever to bleed my lude but finally got pressure back in the lines. lol i was freaked out cause it took so long to get it to finally have a clutch pedal again. oh i went to Pep Boys for the master cylinder, they have pretty good parts for good prices.

Re: Hard Shifting into 1st and reverse

ok, quick update to this, i'm gonna change out my master cylinder and the hoses. I was thinking that maybe having one straight line from MC to SC will help instead of the Frankenstein setup i have when i swapped.

Plus the MC i got came from advanced...like the generic brand so i'll be buying a more expensive part with a lifetime warranty...

overall i feel its my MC giving out on me...thanks for the help everyone.

Re: Hard Shifting into 1st and reverse

Yes it's a good idea to change both cylinders at the same time as they receive the same amount of work so they wear the same. but really it doesn't sound related to the clutch or any of the hydraulic system, more like syncros like you said.

^^ cool. Another 'fix'd' comment. Like the screen name btw.
