Anybody thought about 3D printing some Prelude parts?

Honestly, like within the past week, I learned that 3D printing is now a consumer-acquireable technology and my mind is blown. Of AALLLLLLLL the **** that can be printed apparently though, I can't stop wondering if I can print an interior door bezel or a spark plug cover (in carbon fiber, even!!)..you know, things on our cars that have been discontinued.

Does anyone have access to a printer like that, or has anyone actually used one to make anything cool?

I don't, but I'm stoked to see where this goes. Great idea!

Re: Anybody thought about 3D printing some Prelude parts?

I've tried looking up local places and there's a few 'hubs' that have the printers, but in order to print to them I'd have to upload my 3D image which..I'm too dumb to know how to do. They don't seem to be advertising any walk-in services.

Fuji was making a nifty p&s 3d camera at one point. Dunno if they still do.
But you could probably find a used one at fleabay perhaps.
Two lenses side by side.

Carbonfiber is not a liquid or anything like that though....

It's a woven fabric. How would you 3d print something that structurally requires a completely different way of being made?

Image. Texture. Appearance of said item as in a look-alike.

Popular Science predicts in time 3D printers will be able to produce actual stuff... like teeth, a heart, tendons and such. Car parts? Hmmm. Make mine a TL please.

It's gaining momentum in the medical field Lindso. Make friends with a brain surgeon.

I wondered that too..it sounds like imitation CF but still has some of the properties to it;

"The machine runs either a 1.75mm fused carbon filament (FFF), or a 4mm composite filament (CFF), using quick-change extruder heads....The company that makes the printer, MarkForged, claims its machine can produce parts with higher a strength-to-weight ratio than 6061-T6 aluminum. 6061 with a T6 temper is certainly not the strongest aluminum flavor going — and probably not the material chosen for the bulk of Ford’s new all-aluminum truck — but it’s the most commonly used aluminum, and still pretty tough stuff."

I'm still just fascinated by the whole idea, imitation or not. Hell, if I can get a kind-of CF spark plug cover with some kind-of CF nostrils for $40 next year, I'd be happy.

That's how I learned about it- I work here at a level one trauma center and I was down in radiology where they were talking about prosthetic bones being printed. I was like WTF, and they showed me a freaking gun that someone printed.

I read some place the cheapest you can buy a 3d printer for is like $3000 and it can only make small things.

Re: Anybody thought about 3D printing some Prelude parts?

My close friend is designing and electric motor bike. He has a 3d printer and I have access to it. Its an extruder model not a infrared light model. It can print stuff about a foot wide and about 2 feet tall. Since its an extruder you can make and control what you feed into it. For instance you can impregnate plastic with carbon fibers(not carbon fiber) and when it hardens its much stronger than the original abs plastic.

Being that its not my printer I have limited use of it while he preps for a race he is entering in March. After that I can make more stuff again. For me personally I have been making models in 3d that can be printed into rare airsoft parts.

If yall have any questions about the process, the cost or the machine just let me know and Ill try my best to figure it out. Oh and his machine cost just over 1200$ but he had to assemble it all and its a 3 axis. Like this one.

Re: Anybody thought about 3D printing some Prelude parts?

Speaking about affordable 3D Printers, I have a FlashForge creator that I actually bought for my father as a birthday present in December but he did not think he would ever use, so he sent it on to me. I have not yet had time to actually set it up, as I have just moved to a new flat, but soon I hope. It has great reviews and a good reputation. It can print the same files as the MakerBot, and is essentially a MakerBot but costs much less. Mine was right at $1000. There is an improved model out now for about $1300.

Re: Anybody thought about 3D printing some Prelude parts?

In the not-so-distant future, i expect the average consumer will be able to order any old car design with the latest safety features and they probably will be driven by an electric engine with some kind of exhaust note synthesizer, and we'd be able to print them out as a DIY kit at home i guess.

For the present though, there's this guy: Replica DB4 Project | My new project car, a scratch built replica Aston Martin DB4
