Spare phone as a gps tracker

I want some thought on this. What if u use a spare iphone with an app like where's my iphone tracker or something of that sort, pay 15 bucks a month to add a line, stash the phone in the car and hardwire to have it charge when ur cars running and track it with ur phone. It sure beats the price of lojack

Re: Spare phone as a gps tracker

I recall reading about some little tabs that can be used to track things via iphone app. Not sure what ever happened to it.

'Where's your kids' type app would work.

Re: Spare phone as a gps tracker

I read an article a couple of years ago where the author described hard wiring the charging cord in an inconspicuous place and then zip tied an old clam shell type cell phone in that location as well. He further went on to say that ALL cell phones MUST have 911 and location I.D. capability whether or not the phone is on a network plan or not. But it is very important you have the model number and serial number of that phone written down so if it is ever stolen, you can give those numbers to the police and they can pinpoint where the vehicle is located. Oh, and make sure your power source is always hot. The good thing about this is even if the car is stolen to strip and the battery is removed the battery in the phone will function for days.

Re: Spare phone as a gps tracker

Thanks for the info, writing the serial would be a good idea , I would like do something similar to that. Idk if hardwiring it to the batt would cause it to drain. I would think once it's charged to 100% it would stop drawing power. But then again idk..

Humbling reminder:

Only a garage (only by comparison) is the best option. Can't steal what you can't see.

If thieves want your car, it's a matter of time

Re: Spare phone as a gps tracker

eddie, a cell phone amperage draw is in milliamps. It would take weeks or even months for it to drain the battery, and once charged the draw is almost nonexistent. And after watching the video( even though it has been speeded up ), battery drawdown would be the least of one's worry.

Re: Spare phone as a gps tracker

Yeah, I got it secure when I'm home, it's when I'm in class at school or at the gym or hiking when I'm worried. I had my teggy stolen at campus once. It sucked. Found it 2 weeks later without the system.

Re: Spare phone as a gps tracker

If you drive a 5th gen Prelude, it's not a highly sought after car.... get a good alarm and lo-jack. Problem solved.

Re: Spare phone as a gps tracker

Yeah. If u had a boost mobile or sum prepaid data plan, that'll be key. I gotta buddy that works at the dealership, see if he hooks it up with a discount. But yeah, I tested that app on another phone and threw it in my wife's car. It tracks pretty good. Follows it on point like if ur using stock map app

Re: Spare phone as a gps tracker

There are two drawbacks

1.location
2.discovery

You gotta put it somewhere in the back of the car where a thief isn't looking

And the location's gotta be dust / water / vibration free for years of service, as well as cannot be removed or smashed by a thief. Noise is their enemy

Personally, I can't wait for Honda to have a onstar service where you can set up a pin or password, because onstar is way better than a cell phone.

I wonder if they still sell the onstar mirrors in best buy... One of my rides would benefit.

a cop told me insurance companies keep track of onstar and see how much you drive and can charge you more for insurance because of it.
