My Unfortunate Birthday

Hey guys, Figured I would vent on here. So I was driving home from my girlfriends house on my birthday (Jan 9th) and my RPM's and tach were going insane. It sounded like it was skipping and bogging. Well on the highway it died on me (sorry to the dude I had to cut off to pull over). Well had to get it towed to the shop I always go to, which costed me $206 and then have them inspect it. I recieved a call the next morning stating that the distributor and ignition coil were fried. Later on in the day and $831 dollars later, I drove her to get some lunch. Sure as Sh&t, the same thing happened...again. Thankfully this time she was able to make it back to the shop. They inspected it again, and turns out that my CAI filter some how had a huge hole in the end (Replaced it in the summer) which then sucked in water, causing the distributor to fail. So, another tech that just got in to work (Has a 400hp turbo integra at home) and took a look at it. The result.....The CAI piping was cut into a short ram intake and a new filter clamped on beside the battery. She runs good as new! As mad as I was having to drop $1038 on my Birthday, Hearing her run again was enough to turn my bad mood into a good one. Just figured I would share. Any Similar stories out there???

Re: My Unfortunate Birthday

Sorry to **** your birthday up more but, $831 to replace $300ish worth of parts??????????

$400-500 labor to unbolt 6 bolts in total, unplug wire harnesses and replace those 2 parts?
Man I replaced both those in the freezing cold at 9pm pitch black in 20 min..... That's insane how much in labor they charged you....

I'll tell you a secret about shops. They charge you 5 hours labor for a 1/2hour job, and then your car sits for 4 1/2 hours before they call you and tell you your cars done. Learn how to fix your car yourself. You can save a ton of money. My lude has never seen the inside of a shop other than the body shop I work at, where I still do the work myself.

That whole water destroyed the distributor story doesn't add up to well.... You would of included that in your story if you drove through a puddle and then you car sputtered and died.... Sounds like your igniters solder point got weak, expanded and opened the circuit, then cooled down and closed the circuit.
Or simply your cap and rotor were bad.

You should of kept the cai, and the filter with the hole in the end, you sure that wasn't just design? I know plenty of filters like that, including my own. But by going short ram you are sucking in warmer air, which means less air in the cylinders which means less power.

Just because a guy drives a 400hp teggy that doesn't make him a master tech.... That makes him a guy with a 400hp teggy.... And I know plenty of techs at shops that aren't very mechanically inclined.... They just know how to turn a wrench better than the average guy lol

Re: My Unfortunate Birthday

ProjectPrelude95, I thought people would assume that it was wet out considering I said it sucked up water, otherwise where would the water have come from??? I am a beginner at learning car mechanics, and she is my daily so I didnt have time to do research and figure out the problem. Im not too sure of any company that makes filters that look like a dog took a bite out it.

Re: My Unfortunate Birthday

i wasnt trying to be a dick towards you lol, i was trying to teach you something. but a hole for design and a dog bite looking hole are 2 different things. and being wet outside and driving through a big puddle are 2 different things also.

either which way, just because someone drives a fast car doesnt mean their word is gold, and be careful about shop pricing. they overcharge alot, they were trying to charge my dad $1200 to replace 2 wheel bearings, (hub assemblies) and 2 shock mounts, including a total of $600 in parts.........

it was $250 a piece for each wheel bearing
and $50 a piece for each shock mount........

then $700 in labor

i took their quote, got the exact same parts they were going to get off autopartswarehouse.com for
$125 a wheel bearing
and $19 a shock mount.

total came out to like $290ish with tax and ****

i did the labor for a floor jack, and 2 jackstands, total of $100ish
took me 3 hours to do all 4 parts, and the car was fine after that. total cost difference for my dad
shop-$1200
me-$400

i saved my dad $800

im just trying to teach you something man, its understandable that the car is your DD, and you are just starting out, but try to learn as fast as you can so you dont have to pay that extra $800....

anyway, happy belated birthday, and its good that your lude is running good.

Re: My Unfortunate Birthday

Money aint worth anything if it can't make you happy peeps. I hate going to shops, but if I don't have a clear head about what the problem is, i'll make it worse(or used to lol). Yeah that's steep, but you can drive it. Bonus.

Damn capricorns having birthdays in the first half of January.
Make your girlfriend pay for some of those charges

Re: My Unfortunate Birthday

One year on my friends birthday, he got barfed on, had to draw blood from a guy on the toilet twice, and came out after work to his car booted for parking in patient parking.

Sometimes it just don't go well. Glad you made it right.
