Broke timing belt. Here's my consequence

Figure I share my story on what happens when belt slips. Was driving on the freeway going 70. I missed a shift and my engine speed kicked up for a sec. I pressed the clutch instantly knowing I made a mistake but it was too late. My engine died, check engine light was on, and I was on the side of the road. My engine wouldn't crank (learning later that it's protecting itself). I knew what happened. The car had this wierd smell and I got towed for 40 bucks(was 5 blocks away). Pulled the side cover and saw my timing belt was still on. My balancing belt was broken (then found out the belt slapped my tdc/crankshaft position sensor)

I checked on the tdc marks and found out when my crank was tdc, the two cams were off my 5 teeth (10oclock when cranks tdc). I lined up the marks and had no compression on all 4 cyl. Pulled the head and found all intake valves were bent

Went to the machine shop payed 240 for valves, resurface, and comp test

Off to the dealership I go. I bought some parts off oem honda website. Was gonna save my self 200 bucks but the wait is 2 weeks then i Canceled my order. Went to the dealership and spent
Headgasket 100
Timing belt 90
Balancing belt 60
Tdc/crankshaft position sensor 332
Autotensioner 130 (i know about the whole auto to manual)
Intake mani gasket 20
Including
Headjob 240
Tow 40.
Later I learned my block is a 96 jdm h22a with a closed deck and still have obd2? Kinda strange ey.

My story so far.... Will stay tune...

Re: Broke timing belt. Here's my consequence

Yeah, the car came with the swap. I didn't know what it had til later. I just remembered always hooking up to check the cars data and values when I was at honda school. All this happened a couple of days ago. I'm pushing to get it on the road. Get it up and running soon. I read if it's closed deck then it's obd1, open deck is obd2.

Glad you're taking it so well mang! Some people just toss in the towel. Those money shifts are killer! Just did one of those, but lucky enough it was 5th to 4th, so no harm done. It's those 3rd-2nd shifts...

In for pics

^^ Notice the magnet tray and latex gloves on the work cart? Everything neatly arranged, on a covered table, cardboard under the car...

Tells me op has been around the block a lap or two.

My only question.... is that floor carpeted? Nice n cushy walking surface.

Re: Broke timing belt. Here's my consequence

I wish it was carpet. It's f***ing rocks! Talk about losing bolts pretty quick.I had to special order my headgasket. There's 6 dealerships and non of them had it so I got wait til mon-tues with this holiday and there parts place being closed til then. I was gonna go aftermarket but oem the better way to go. Guess it's worth the wait.

Re: Broke timing belt. Here's my consequence

Gravel. Ugh! Sears sells a mega magnet that picks up screws from a few inches away.
Best part is the non magnetic collar that keeps it from getting 'sucked up' against nearby metals.

If memory serves.. $15.

Re: Broke timing belt. Here's my consequence

Those fatigue mats for the win. The keep you from getting that body fatigue, and keeps bolts from disappearing, costs like 40.00 for 6 or some randomness. And lets you kneel when doing work on the floor. Damn that reminds me...

Re: Broke timing belt. Here's my consequence

Hopefully that's all it needs. I would hate to know I spun a bearing or my trannys jacked up. So far the wait for the hg gave me an opportunity to detail the engine and change the tdc sensor out.

Re: Broke timing belt. Here's my consequence

you should have converted your timing componets to h23 timing tensioners while you where already their, deleted your tdc from your oil pump housing, and convert you dizzy to obd1 :)

i did this on an h23v though. same concept

Re: Broke timing belt. Here's my consequence

I finally got my headgasket from the dealership yesterday. Got a chance to clean my engine bay

Installed the rocker arms/shaft/intake mani

With the rain and me only having time at nights til the weekend, I should have it running by Thursday. All I got left is install the header, timing belt, balancing belt, hook up sensors, coolant and vacuum hoses, valve adjustment etc etc

Re: Broke timing belt. Here's my consequence

(Update)I got it running last weekend, it ran great/strong. I have a small issue on a vacuum hose I couldn't figure out on my jdm intake. The layout for the usdm is different to the jdm. The option to put a hose on it is not there, Help. Identify vacuum hose I wrote a page on it but it got locked with no help. It is not in the service page nor the in.honda.com (site that the dealership uses). All the sensors seem to been used, I got no check engine light but I do recall something was pluged in. Also have a slight squeal coming from the timing belt/balancing belt area
