Popping Sounds

Hey everyone, I just acquired a 1998 base prelude. I've had many hondas and most of them being accords so I'm somewhat familiar with the car and the engines since they share so many parts. On cold days/mornings I hear a popping/grinding noise coming from the engine bay. I checked the cv joints and the boots look perfect, next I took off the fill plug from the transmission and fluid came pouring out of it. I've searched the internet but everyone keeps telling me its the cv joints. The weird part is that on a warm day, any day above 50 degrees, the popping/grinding does not occur. Any ideas? I've replaced cv joints on all of my hondas and a few eclipses I've owned in the past, so being able to do so isn't the problem, just don't want to replace something and find out I wasted money. Thanks in advance for your help guys.

Btw the popping is only when I first get the car moving, it doesn't pop in reverse, and pops a lot in 1st, and a little going into second. Even if I'm going in a straight line it pops, so not necessarily while turning like the usual sign of a bad cv joint. Shocks are shot and will be replacing them soon, but I doubt that has anything to do with this issue.

Re: Popping Sounds

It's your transmission. When is the last time anyone changed and filled the fluid?

Re: Popping Sounds

Good description there mooney. Can you tell which side the sound comes from?

Sideswipe makes a good point. Since you just got the car it would be money well spent to change all your fluids and even do a t-belt/water pump change if you don't know the history.

And yes it could be a shock, or bushing. From your description it does not sound like the cv.

I had a rattling in my 97 that drove me crazy. Sounded like a speedo cable, which the car didn't even have. It was a loose hood hinge screw. Also another annoying sound was a 3/8 box end wrench in the fender. So you never know.

Re: Popping Sounds

Noise comes from the front middle of the car. When I took the fill plug off fluid came out and it was golden in color which I take to mean minimal breakdown of the fluid. Fluid is cheap and I'll start with that first because it does sound like its coming from the transmission. Any other ideas to check while I'm in there this coming Monday?

Re: Popping Sounds

Changed the fluid with fresh Honda manuel fluid tonight but still have slight cracking/pipping noises. Still at a loss for this one. Almost want to replace CV joints but with the problem being temperature related, I don't think that would account plush anything.

Re: Popping Sounds

Could be your clutch needs to be aligned, and doesn't act right until it slips into place when heated. Just to check, is a pain in the ass.
