92 Prelude timing belt

I am trying to solve a timing belt issue with a 92 prelude si. It has the h23a1 motor in it. Some one worked on the car and I think they put the wrong belt on it. The belt is loose and it jumps time. I pulled up the timing belt procedure from alldata for the car. It shows the spring belt tensioner and I have the racheting hydraulic one. The timing setup I have shows up on the later vtec motor. The Napa belt that is on it is for the one with the spring tensioner . I think the belt is too long. I have set up timing belts and chains on lots of cars , but not hondas. Any ideas would help. Dan

Re: 92 Prelude timing belt

You def have the wrong tensioner in there. H23's should have manual (as you called it, spring tensioner). H22's came with the auto (hydraulic) tensioners, which are a big downgrade since they're notorious for failing, which inevitably destroys at least the head.
And if you have an H22 tensioner in there, I'm betting you prolly have an H22 belt as well.

I'd do an entire t-belt job if I were you to make sure you have all the correct parts; T and B-belt, tensioners, water pump, and oil seals.

Re: 92 Prelude timing belt

I checked the Napa number against the catalog and belt on it is for the h23. The number is different from the h22. I think the belt for the h23 is longer. Is the aluminum timing housing the same for the h22 and the h23? Will the h22 belt work for me. I am helping my daughter and boyfriend try to fix the car to sell it. They bought a new pulley tenisnor housing for the h22. Thanks Dan
