How to retard timing

My friend couldnt pass his emissions/smog test, so he retarded his timing, and turned his fuel knob all the way down.

How would someone do this. I asked him but he got a shop to do it.

I'm looking for a DIY on both. And would turning the fuel knob all the way down work?

thanks

Re: How to retard timing

If you replace the air in your tires, your car will run more efficiently. Then hurry up and get the smog test done before the air in the tires sours.

Lol... Wow.. Ill have to remember that fuel knob lol
You can retard your timing by adjusting the dist. But it's gonna loose power.

Seriously though.. Wt* is a fuel knob lol
I'll have to remember to ask a few of the master techs at work Monday if they've ever heard of such a thing back in the " good ol days "

Re: How to retard timing

That's the fuel pressure regulator? Try turning it. If it doesn't work, turn it some more. If problem persists, remove.

Re: How to retard timing

Seriously though..in this order;

-Distributor cap & rotor
-Spark plugs and wires
-Seafoam
-Oil change
-O2 Sensor
-Catalytic converter

The only reason you'd need to advance/retard your timing would be to calibrate and optimize the TIMING of fuel detonation in you combustion chamber. If you advance too much, combustion happens before your piston reaches the height of its stroke, and a number of other terrible things can happen like burnt valves, overheating, ect. If you retard your timing too much, well in layman's terms, it'd be like you starting to throw a punch with your elbow already extended too far to get any power behind it. Ultimately, it would indicate that your ignition system is not functioning at max efficiency, hence hash marks #1 and #2 on my list up there. So rather than ****ing up your engine, go spend $20 to maintain it like the responsible automobile owner you are and form a habit out of it.

There are emissions standards in place for a reason. Quit posting threads on how to 'cheat' it. We are not here to give you advice on how to illegally manipulate your car to pass your region's vehicle emission requirements. We are here to teach you new words and terms like in the above paragraph so you don't come on here and get flamed for asking how to turn your fuel knob.

In the good ole days the fuel knob was a manual choke. You either twisted a knob or pulled on it to add or remove choke when first starting your engine.
Cars haven't used them here since Reagan was president. Throttle bodies and fuel injection motors use sensors that read the water temperature and decide what to do. They're the IACV etc...

My weedeater has a similar device. Chain saws, pipe saws etc too.
