Gas saving "chips"

Well with gas prices being so freakin high now adays, I see nothing but adds online for "gas saving, power boosting chips". Now, I have read wishing that these things wern't too good to be true. But the more I have looked and read and searched I have found out that, "Yes, they are too good to be true". Now in good PZ fashion I can't just post a statement and not provide evidence to back up whats coming out of my pie hole, that might get me . So here is some of the info on the subject I have found.

Looking For A Miracle: We Test Automotive 'Fuel Savers' - Popular Mechanics

Fake Modification "Chips" and "Gas Savers" | eBay

Now, If anyone here is able to find anything that will actually improve MPG other than; properly inflated tires, not constantly flooring it, regular oil changes, lightening up the car and the typical intake, header, exhaust mods I would love to know. I hope that the information I have posted will help out anyone in the future. I understand that a Google search of "gas saving chips review" would have gotten the results I listed, I just feel that this was a good bit of info for anyone that stumbles upon this thread.

Re: Gas saving "chips"

I believe the H22 lives to rev high and is more efficient cruising up at 3k then it would at 2k just the way it's designed and from how it behaves shifting below 2-2.5k. Heck, peak torque isn't made till way up. I'm not sure how the Accord 5th gear (f22) would get along with the H22.

If I we're to go with a chip I'd want to see power gains. Maybe look into something by Phearable.net?

But I hear you on gas prices right now...it's ridiculous. $61 to fill 45L in my lude. =/ Which could last me a week, and assuming my driving stays consistent throughout, nearly $250/month on gas.

Re: Gas saving "chips"

Considering I drive:
6700lb suburban at 10mpg city/17mpg highway(more like 8/15)
3700lb gto at 17mpg city/26mpg highway(uses premium so its a wash)

Your gas economy argument is invalid. Learn to row that shifter. A true tune would change the fuel delivery, sure but may also increase the octane rating in the process, and might even call for higher than 93.

Considering all the money spent on body work, rims, audio, engine modification, and interior, you could've afforded the gas if you eliminated three of those caregories. Unless you're the original owner or even the second, no one here bore the burden of DEPRECIATION as well as fuel costs. If you cut out 1 meal out on the street /day at $6.00 a meal, that's $30 right there.

Sometimes, you have to deal with the fact you're living beyond your means too you know? No chip gonna fix that. If gas is killing you in a Honda, you're not living right.

Honda owners complaining about gas mileage
What next, Prius drivers??

Even with my boosted F22 I was getting 24-26mpg's

Now I'm getting 18mpg's, driving 120miles/day, premium only. Your argument is severely invalid.

Re: Gas saving "chips"

Put and keep good wax all over the car. If your finish is dull like mine, you will pick a few dozen miles per tank full.
I had an 84 dodge ram that got 12 highway. I waxed it throughout and got 16 afterwards. Same with a Ford F-150. Went from 15 to 20 after waxing it.

Now my preludes... about 25-50 more miles per tankful.
Use good gas. Not the cheap stuff for a few more miles per tankful.

Bottom line here, if Exxon, Mobil, Shell etc wanted a chip to work, there'd be one. But the stuff out there now isn't a viable threat to their revenue. Anything substantial would not be on the market very long here in America.

Re: Gas saving "chips"

Good one bykfixer, that's pretty interesting...air flowing better on waxed surface.

And yes we're complaining about fuel economy in a Honda LOL because on average in the real world we're not getting that much better than a C6 Corvette considering the power differences.

But I love driving the Prelude so it's worth it...I guess. If I really wanted fuel economy I would've gone TDi Golf/Jetta or CRX to get that 40+mpg. Heck a crotchrocket wins in every category except multi-season driveability and being a 1.75 seater.

And yes I have briefly spoken to phearable, and it is possible to get better MPG with a chipped ECU and a tune. But the keyword to that is TUNE. These products that are being advertised dont require or even recommend a tune.

Here is the email from me and phearable

Honda's are Reputed as one of the most fuel efficent/economic car companies in the world.

You can't squeeze blood from a penny. There are perfectly working cars that don't even get the MPGs a smoking honda gets. Thought that was pretty clear.

The "chip" is a scam and will damage your engine. People will pay $50 to destroy their car. Really not muh else to add

I may have missed something. That's almost exactly what I posted. But I still want to know who is arguing.

Re: Gas saving "chips"

Just bought a tranny from synchrotech and I wish I put an accord 5th gear. Was reading a post from someone here saying at 80 mph its at 3400 rpms rather than a steady 4k which in my opinion is the greatest gain in mpg you'll make... you'll make your money back after the first 6 months of driving to pay for the tranny work. But since I just did that job I don't see myself doing it Any time soon I wouldnt waste your time with all the little **** but I am a fan of nitro in my tires

OK guys Im still a little lost. Who was arguing about anything, why does bykfixer have popcorn? And this wasn't really a complain about MPG thread. It was more of an informative thread about something im sure lots of people want an answer too.

Re: Gas saving "chips"

"Your argument is invalid" is a meme. No one was actually arguing naj.

There is no reasonable solution to improving gas mileage unless using unsafe and expensive methods. Brown gas hybrid is the cheapest possible solution, but requires a tune and leaves a very explosive gas as a fuel alternative. Yes it works, but spending 2500 to save 1000.00, is nonsense. Three years of driving to break even, without maintenance, and damage will kill the motor. It's cheaper to purchase a clone scooter, and drive that to work.

Ask Itsdatoneguy, he's suggesting bikes all the time.

Anytime sideswipe enters the thread, there's a movie happening. Some are action packed. Other times it's like the first batman movie.. when it looks like action is about to begin, dialogue resumes..
