2000 Prelude as a first car?

Hi all, I'm new here and I wanted to know your opinion on a 2000 Prelude or just a 5th gen Prelude in general as a first car? Thanks!

Re: 2000 Prelude as a first car?

Bought a 2000 type sh for my first car and I'm telling you right now I'm living a dream. Soflakidd is absolutely correct tho it is VERY expensive to maintain but if your a dyi'er its an awesome feeling fixing your car I've owned mine for a year now and I've put probably a comfortable 5 grand into her:) but that's with a new tranny clutch and flywheel all the other was basic maintenance that the previous owner didn't care about like an alternator rotors and calipers, radiator , sparkplug wires and so on but I love the car handles great and gets you out of sticky situations pretty easily grant you its not the fastest car but it has balls

Re: 2000 Prelude as a first car?

97 Prelude SH is my first car and bb6xstealth and soflakidd are right Expensive but if you can do most work yourself and are good with money owning a 5thgen is perfectly manageable. I have owned my car since November and have replaced 2000$ worth of parts. Mostly maintence things the previous owner decided not to do.

Type t also asked if its a base or an SH. Basically base would be cheaper to maintain, just less stuff to break.

maintaining it will cost money more so than a civic, but its fun to drive and to me, well worth it

Re: 2000 Prelude as a first car?

I'm not tracking "expensive to maintain." I've lived with an Integra and a Civic (and an Odyssey and an Element) to compare against, and can't say I sank more time or money per year into either of my Preludes. Same goes for most other cars I've owned. For a 5th gen, you have to replace the timing belt about every 100k, and since it's a good idea to do the other belts, the hoses, and the water pump about the same time, it's a large outlay, but you do it only once every seven years, give or take! The rest of the time, it's just oil and brake pads. Maybe a set of shocks, depending on when you got it.

And drive.

Now, if you want to modify the engine...H22s can get expensive. But that's just for overachievers who can't leave fine engineering be. :)

Re: 2000 Prelude as a first car?

I saw a 5th gen shell that a couple guys used in their drag car and the front end was in the air for most of the quarter mile, anything can be done with enough money to be fair though

Re: 2000 Prelude as a first car?

Any old car is a money pit.

$500 here n there or $350+/mth for new.

You choose.

My first car was reliable. The second was 'cool'. I learned a lot about fixing cars with the cool one because it stayed broken half the time.

Re: 2000 Prelude as a first car?

2000 Prelude SH the first car I bought myself...Coming to a year in ownership... I really do love this car and I had to put a bit of money into it to keep in it in tip top shape. I say for a first car this a great one to own, great handling (its greatest strength), decent power and pretty comfortable and quiet for a Honda FWD sports coupe.

Between this forum and taking an interest in the car I feel your car should be in good shape... there is no problem that hasn't been tackled by someone. Thats to the great thing about owning a older car. Overall any used car will be pretty expensive initially (replacing major parts and maintenance) that the previous owner did not take care of before they sold it.

If you do buy it depending on how long you wanna keep it for focus on maintenance and then add mods later that way your not throwing your money away

If you can find one that hasn't been ragged on with lower mileage you shouldn't have an issue. I bought a bone stock 2000 Base last year with 120,000KM on it as my first car, haven't had to spend much money on it at all. Do oil changes and what not yourself to cut maintenance costs. Like any sports car expect to pay more for insurance and premium gas.

Re: 2000 Prelude as a first car?

In my opinion the 5th generation Prelude is one of the best looking cars Honda ever created. That being said I dont know how good of a driver you are or the lifestyle you live. So ill only speak for my self, When I bought my first car I was only 16 and made a hell of a lot of mistakes! Im very thankful that none of those mistakes where in a Prelude. So my best advice is to buy something that's not so rare and sought after by Honda enthusiasts.

The first, easily. Discounting consumables (tires, brake pads, oil, etc) and insurance, I don't think I've averaged $500/year in maintenance costs in the 20+ years I've had this car. Or the one before it. And in most cases, you can pile on obscene mileage before you have to rebuild it -- I think most people go down the rebuild route far too early (or just like pulling apart the engine). These are tough engines, especially if just used for daily driving.

Throw $20-$25/month into the car maintenance fund, and you'll be fine.

Re: 2000 Prelude as a first car?

There is a sticky in the 5th gen tech forum that helps you to tell a lemon from a cherry. Lemon Preludes are the worst to maintain. If you throw money at all your car problems, without diagnosing it's very expensive.

Yeah, I'm 16 about to turn 17 and I want to do most of the work myself. And believe me, I won't be starting a family for a long while.
