99 prelude check engine light, and idle issue.

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum- go easy! Lol I've researched some stuff to try and fix my idle issue but to no luck yet. Should I clean my idle control valve?
The check engine light- I had autozone take codes, And the only one that popped up was my gas cap.
The previous owner (I think) did an h22 head swap on an h23 block. Runs fantastic! But the light won't go away. I also had my local mechanic shut it off, but it came right back. What could I do there?
Thanks!

Gas cap cel means vacuum leak. Idle surge can happen as vacuum leak as well. Check your filler hose.

My ford ranger has cel from gas cap. It's my filler hose. Just been too lazy to fix it.

Could be cap don't seal too.

Re: 99 prelude check engine light, and idle issue.

The weird idle happens when I first start my car when it's cooled down, and it try's to go down to its regular rev RPMS (like 1-1 1/2) but when it does, it revs up to 2 and then back down to 1 and repeats it till my engine is warm. Aka when I start driving

Try these steps for the idle problem. I had the problem and the FITV was my issue. I however didn't have a CEL code for gas cap. I have one for my knock sensor.

Cleaning the IACV won't hurt either. Takes about 5 minutes to take off. Just use carb cleaner and spray all the gunk out.

Re: 99 prelude check engine light, and idle issue.

Tried to take the IACV off yesterday to no luck, one of the bolts is stubborn, what do you suggest I try to do to take it off without stripping the head?
And what tool should I use to take it off? A socket wrench won't fit. I got the 1st one off easily but the 2nd one wouldn't budge.

Re: 99 prelude check engine light, and idle issue.

And I found out that the codes were related to one of my 02 sensors, and my cat.
Fixed the sensor and the cat is on it's way.

CEL related on a vacuum leak is the same make to make for gas cap. You'd be suprised how many things are the same model to model, make to make.
You said he had a cap CEL, I pointed out the leak could be the filler hose. Ranger or road runner, CEL for gas cap indicates a vacuum leak

Glad you found the issues.
