need opinions

just need a few opinions on a decision

i need to fix my exhaust leak, i need to drill out a stud on my header that connects to the downpipe.

it would be cheaper and easier to drill out a hole bigger than a bolt i would use, and just put the bolt in and tighten with a nut, non threaded to the header

should i do that?

or drill out the old stud, same as 1st option, and use a tap to retap the threads for a m10x1.25 bolt so it would be threaded to the header?

it would be cheaper to do the 1st option, but would that cause a potential risk in the future as far as leaks?

Re: need opinions

Either are fine. I assume it's not an expensive header - so you'll probably end up swapping it someday anyway.

Go cheaper route.

Re: need opinions

i actually dont have to anymore lol
i will be getting a more expensive header later down the road but now this will have to do, its a megan racing 4-2-1 header.

but besides that, i called a locally owned hardware store today, and he said why not just heat up the stud and extract it with vise grips. i said i dont have a torch, he put me on hold, 5 min later he came back to the phone said call him in the morning, his buddy said i can bring it to his shop and he will get it out for me for free. just bring him the header and he will help me out.

i love local businesses.

Re: need opinions

Last I had a stuck stud - I let the car warm up for a bit, then put on a few pairs of heavy duty gloves and yanked the header off - then proceeded to quickly attack it with vice grips

had to be quick though, since I had to unbolt the entire exhaust and header while it was still hot >_> torch didn't work in my case....
