So I had this weird idea for an exhaust...

Ive had a custom 2.5" exhaust on my 5th gen for awhile. Sounds ehh, and its crush bent. So I thought about buying a legit catback and decided on Megan Racing (havent actually bought it yet). But then I was wondering if there was a way to make it even better. What if you could put an electric cutout right behind the cat, wired to a three way switch. One position keeps it open, the next keeps it closed, and the third opens the switch when you hit VTEC, that way you get a bit of torque from the backpressure down low, and have a free-flowing exhaust up high. Kind of a crazy idea but I think I could make it work. Any thoughts?

eh so your exhaust would only work properly at high rpms
whats the point?

Re: So I had this weird idea for an exhaust...

Wouldn't that do more harm, by not being able to release that built up exhaust????

You have to tell the computer what you're doing, right?.. otherwise it'll be working against your mod.
In theory it sounds possible, but would take a lot of research, and combustion know how vs tuning to actually make a difference.
Maybe research formula 1 exhaust.

We run cutouts all the time in the V8 world. I had cutouts on a LT1 Camaro once, defiantly noticed it was loud as hell but I did feel more power with them open.

Re: So I had this weird idea for an exhaust...

Look into the wiring for the vtec solenoid and ecu outputs that put out a signal once vtec engages. If one of the wires puts off a 12v signal specifically and only when vtec engages, then you can tap into that as a control wire going to a relay that would trigger the cutout to open once vtec engages.

Then you can have a standard killswitch to open/close the relay for daily driving. Although i feel that would be pointless in a way because if you only want it working while in vtec, you should have no need to complicate things more with a killswitch.

And if you are not experienced enough to continuously shift while in vtec, you will be wasting your time with the relay shutting off when you fall out of the engagement zone/higher RPM's. Eventually causing things to burn out faster vs later due to the constant usage.

Re: So I had this weird idea for an exhaust...

just put some sponges in the exhaust tip whenever you plan on hitting vtec, and shoot them out the back, that would act as the same of what your going for!!

Putting the cutout after the cat doesn't make sense at all.

And where else would you put it?

Before the cat? Remove your o2 sensors.... doesn't work well.

Before the muffler? that's about the only other spot it could go besides right after the cat.

Wouldnt having an open exhaust lose torque?

low end. a lot of people run switches that activate at a certain rpm like 3800, that way if you have it armed at 3800 it will open.

just put the cut out after the rear o2, that way you wont throw any codes.

Even with a 3" exhaust, a good tune will correct that.
