EGR Valve and port cleaning...

Alright my CEL is on cause my my EGR Valve not getting enough lift. Tomorrow Im going to tackle the job and clean the ports while Im at it. I've done researched and watched the video on how to do it but I just don't understand how to get the original plugs out. All I know is that I have to drill into them, and then what? The people at the honda dealership couldn't help me much. I've read something about using a slide hammer? is that what I need? Thanks

Oh and the car is a 96 with the H22a1 if that means anything.

Also make sure to test the egr valve, there should be a little thing that looks like a button on the bottom of it, try gently pressing it in and see if it bounces back in place. If it doesn't you need a new egr valve.

Re: EGR Valve and port cleaning...

Be prepaired fo all more work than the video is showing. Since you have a 96 your port plugs are more than likely welded in place. You must first grind the welds down to get to the plugs. Another thing is the port plugs from Honda do not fit right in the ports on the intake manifolds older than 97. I made my own out of some brass pipe plugs. After I did the job being bent over the motor for over an hour grinding I wished I would have just taken the whole manifold off. Which is what I suggest you do as well.

Thanks a lot. I knew something was different about my ports from the ones in the video. Well I'm just going to clean the valve up and see if the CEL goes away. I'll have to take care of the ports when I'm more prepared lol

Re: EGR Valve and port cleaning...

Yeah it's a good idea to bE fully prepared. It's quite a job and like I said it will e easier to remove to entire manifold. Will make the job much easier.

Re: EGR Valve and port cleaning...

How did you make the port plugs that fit? or where did you get them from? I picked them up from the honda dealership today but if they won't fit I'm going to return them

Re: EGR Valve and port cleaning...

Mine just fit. I had to get them for a 5th gen and drill out the holes to 25/64".

Check my sig for a little guidance. I'm going to make it a complete write up one of these days. lol

You are correct! I forgot, let me edit my post so nobody is confused.

Yeah it was a 25/64 bit, I believe. I just lined it up with the flat side of one of the plugs. It's a hair smaller than the actual plug itself to ensure a snug fit.

Re: EGR Valve and port cleaning...

Attemping to remove my egr valve today to clean it.. and theres this one f*cking bolt that is impossible to reach b/c of the shape of the egr valve (little circular rim around it that protrudes out). Did anyone else have to remove anything else to get to their EGR? or am i being retarded? lol tried using wd40 to get that last bolt off
