5th gen Timing Belt Change

Sorry for the millionth repost but my lady and I are tackling my timing belt today on my auto 5th gen. We are changing the cam seals, water pump, tensioner and all those shenanigans. Yesterday we broke the crank pully loose and got her off. Took off all the bolts for the lower timing cover, and no just have to get it out of there. My question is this. I purchased this car used and wanted to make sure everything is lined up and in time. When doing this, I have heard about using a straight edge on the arrows on the Cam Gears to make sure they are perfectly straight. Are these the only ones I should care about? With the timing belt off, I want to make sure everything is aligned perfectly. How do I do this?

Re: 5th gen Timing Belt Change

first make sure the crank is at TDC (pull the plug on cylinder 1 and put something in there thats longer than 12", i used a 15" extension) than rotate the cams so the arrow is pointing up (there 2 notches on the cam pulleys, line those up flush with the surface of the head) than install the belt. it may take a couple times to get it right, ive been working on cars for 15+ years and rarely get it right the first time. also may want to think about replacing the auto tensioner with a manual one or you can make one with your auto tensioner housing.

and heres some good pics on how to do the balance shafts

Second, please search timing belt change on prelude zone. This subject has been covered many times and the information is there. Complete step by step how to's and a few with what to do when it goes wrong. Finally manual vs auto tensioner issues.

there is a link above to make your own manual tensioner if you want to save the $100 it costs to buy one.
