Icon5 Need transmission advice for an auto 5th gen

Hey everyone,

I was hoping to get some feedback from some of you:

The transmission on my automatic 5th gen recently went bad and I am faced with a few options. I took it to a transmission specialist and he claims he can fix it for about $2000. However, for this price I am tempted to look into having someone convert it to a 5-spd. It almost seems worth it to pay few hundred more dollars to do that instead.

It's a '99 and 150,000 miles on it, but I am only the second owner and it has had no other problems to my knowledge. I would hate to get rid of it, but I am wondering if it is worth the money to fix the auto trans because I know they are notoriously bad and I am worried it would just die on me again. I'm also not sure if it is worth all the hassle of buying all the parts and swapping in a 5spd.

If you were in my situation would you:

1. Fix the Auto Transmission
2. Swap in a 5spd
3. Cut my losses and move on?

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks,
-Mike

Any chance of finding a used trans from junk yard? or cheap parts car?

I haven't looked into that, I figured buying a used auto transmission would be a bigger risk than getting the one I already have fixed.

if you could find a cheap used parts car with a manual transmission, it could save a lot on the swap, and you could part out the parts car to make money back and offset the cost even further. i think that is what he was trying to get at

Thanks, I misunderstood, would you suggest that rather than trying to buy all the parts individually?

Re: Need transmission advice for an auto 5th gen

what dallas said is what i did. got a parts car and split it with a friend for 300 a piece. he took the engine and i took the swap parts. he sold the rest and pretty much made back ever dime. keep an eye out and you'll find something good. this site had has part-outs every now and again. fewer and fewer as time goes by because there are just less and less ludes on the road... and i was also sourcing parts for the swap when i bought the parts i have, it would have totaled almost 900 bucks. trannies alone at the time were around 4-500 bucks. so i got my whole swap kit for less than a tranny would have cost alone.

Re: Need transmission advice for an auto 5th gen

also, i believe a 4th gen h23 transmission will fit in our 5th gens, not 100% sure about the f22 transmission. but if you look for a 5 speed from any 4th or 5th gen on craigslist, you could probably get it, especially if it runs, in which case you can sell the engine and all it's components.

Re: Need transmission advice for an auto 5th gen

Thanks for the input guys, I'm leaning towards making the swap now. However, do any of think it is risky to get the AT repaired? would there be a high chance of it failing again?

Re: Need transmission advice for an auto 5th gen

Any prelude auto will fail eventually. Getting it fixed makes it last a little bit longer, but it will break eventually.
