DOHC Engine Noise

Hey guys, I recently bought my 01 prelude and its been going well. BUT, there is an engine noise that I don't like. A mechanic says that either the VTECH or a cam lobe is wearing out. I am terrified to believe either. What do you think? The car is auto and odometer reads 88k.

Re: DOHC Engine Noise

both the tensioner and belt, sounds like its flapping around when you rev it up.

Re: DOHC Engine Noise

Your tensioner Is going out. Stop driving it and go fix it. Before you f up the valves. Also you spelled VTEC wrong. It's not the telephone company.

Theres a telephone company called VTECH? sounds cool. Thanks for the advice, unfortunately it's my daily and I can't stop driving it. I've worked on motors before, just wish I had someone to help me out with it. Belts are cheap, same with the tensioner. But labor is a bit*ch

Re: DOHC Engine Noise

Keep driving it and you can screw stuff up more then just a "belt" Take off the timing belt cover and inspect it. You can tackle a timing belt job in one day.

If you don't fix it. You will be riding THE BUS! Fix it now or don't drive latter you choose

Re: DOHC Engine Noise

as of right now it is a cheap fix if you know how. later on down the road, maybe a few days from now, you never know, but if something goes wrong with that belt, you will be looking at an engine rebuild, because of serious damage to your head components, which will be a hell of alot more money, and a lot more of a pain in the ass job...

Re: DOHC Engine Noise

And don't just get a replacement auto tensioner. Either convert it to an H23 manual tensioner or get the kaizenspeed tensioner or else this will just keep happening.

The H22 auto tensioners are known to fail.

Re: DOHC Engine Noise

So sick sounding. Get it repaired now. And it's not VTECH as much as he's forgetting to add the 22. VTECH22 doesn't look so dumb anymore does it?

You're welcome.

Re: DOHC Engine Noise

Thanks guys, you all are bamfs. So im picking up parts today and hopefully installing everything monday. Does my parts list sound like EVERYTHING I need?

Timing Belt
Dayco Timing Belt | Product Details | Pep Boys

Tensioner
KAIZENSPEED | H22 Timing Tensioner

Valve Cover Gasket
RockAuto Parts Catalog

Is that it? Timing belt, valve cover gasket and the tensioner?

Does anyone have a link to a write up for this? I found plenty of videos on youtube, but the all have the engine removed and/or cover off the motor already.

Re: DOHC Engine Noise

its a pain in the ass job... but you should be able to find it in the repair manual here
5th gen (97-99) Service Manual
its for 97-99 years but it should be the same as they are all H engines.
