friend got into an accident need some advice.

My friend bumped into an prelude driver and made a small hole in the back bumper. The dude now wants to replaced the bumper and have it repainted. He says its about 300 for the bumper and 600 for the repainting and labor. Anyone have any advice? I feel 900 dollars is too much for a bumper and he is very adamant about going to his mechanic.

I don't see a bumper costing 300 but the paint I do see 600. It's a pearl paint job.

Re: friend got into an accident need some advice.

It may be a white pearl paint job but i'm 100% positive it's not going to be 600 dollars to paint the bumper. 300 sounds right for a rear bumper because it's OEM and they charge you a ton. Got my front lip painted for like 400 I think.

its not even that bad lol dude doesn't need a new bumper a body shop will take care of that tiny hole. its gonna be atleast 5-600.. pearl white is a hard color to match perfectly

Re: friend got into an accident need some advice.

tell the guy to have "his mechanic" buy some plastic body filler and fill it. look brand new. and +1 on pearl white being hard to match. any finish other than gloss is difficult to match.

Re: friend got into an accident need some advice.

If i were the owner of that prelude For a hole that small id say gimme 200 bucks cash and id fill it up and cut the paint myself, and keep the 100 id have left over as an "inconvenience fee" no way 900 bucks for something that small that's just retarded. besides it always pays to have insurance in case of an accident where you'd owe someone some real money. If i were your friend id get my own quote for a professional to get it done if he insists and if he refuses. Tell him to stick it. All the best of luck in your situation though!

Re: friend got into an accident need some advice.

Be cheaper to install reverse sensor for when you're about to tap another car. Some people need an experience like this to learn a life lesson. Suggest the backup sensor thing and see if the driver will go for it. Probably cheaper too.

Re: friend got into an accident need some advice.

Sounds about right. Recently had a rear bumper replaced and trunk lid repaired and all repainted and matched to the tune of $1500 plus bucks. All this thanks to an inattentive 18 wheeler at a red light!
Estimates for this repair ranged from $1500 to over $3000.

Re: friend got into an accident need some advice.

I have fixed damage like that in less than 15 minutes with a plastic welder. Thin coat of poly body filler, light sand, then paint. there is NO way that bumper needs to be replaced.

There is also no way this repair costs $1500-$3000..........lol

by law the owner of the car has to get 3 estimates and he receives the average amount of the 3 estimates. It's not up to him for your friend to choose how much she pays

Sounds right. My girlfriend got recently bumped into. Just a lil scratch and repainting was very close to $600.

Re: friend got into an accident need some advice.

Why not pay what the recipt would say. The paint i would say is tough and it may cost around the $600 range but the $900 price tag in repair is just an estimate. Simply pay for it when you both see the recipt that way it is fair for the both of you.

Re: friend got into an accident need some advice.

I've been rear ended twice. Both times my bumper should have been replaced but due to the insurance company being Progressive on both occasions (both people that hit me had them) I was only given $500 to tape off and paint half the bumper and clear the rest to blend it.

The actual damage quote from a bodyshop to properly match the paint and replace the bumper (and i'm talking family discounts) would have been at the very least $900.

Looks like that car has Mugen rear valances.... Almost want to bet the owner is on one of the prelude forums - what state is the lude from, i'll look out for him to post a thread on being in a hardcore accident lol

Re: friend got into an accident need some advice.

Hardcore accident!!! Yes with a full body cast and traction cables already installed in the prelude!!! Years of rehab and he many never work again. The car will definitely need a pull or two to straighten out the chasis. The car may never drive the same again.

Heads are gonna roll. Rofl!

Thanks for everyone's input. The thing is the paint job on his car is some special color so repainting cost alot apparently. Anyways my friend cut it down to 800 and shes going to stick with that. Guess nothing she could really do. And the car is in california

all paint colors on the 97-01 preludes have multiple metalics and a pearl in them, very hard to match, and difficult to spray.
next time run into a kia!

Re: friend got into an accident need some advice.

her deductible is 750. The thing is she is a new driver and doesn't want her insurance to go up. But the prick is now asking her to pay for a rental car for a week since he needs it for work ($300). I'm telling her to go with insurance. This guy is really hard to deal witih.
