Timing belt

I am the original owner of a 2000 prelude (us model) with 46000 miles. I was told by the dealer i may need a new timing belt. do i need to worry about it at this time?

Re: Timing belt

Honda recommends every 6 years or 90k miles. Do you need to worry about it? I wouldn't, I have 200k miles and 16 years on my original timing belt, just inspected it a few days ago and it looks great. Is your car driven frequently?

Re: Timing belt

Welcome and some pitures please

Depends on the 46,000 miles. If you drove the Prelude like you hate it, I'd switch it out. If your car has never seen 4,000 rpm, it's a safe bet your belt is in good condition. Do you know how to inspect it?

Re: Timing belt

still should have a good 40k miles. Only reason people change it right at suggested intervals is peace of mind.

@dbd6604: for real!? thats crazy. I dont even know when the last time the belt was done on my lude, tbh I dont even care. I'll take my chances and change it in 20,000 maybe.

the last gen of a car usually becomes a classic. that and some people dont drive them frequently, rather store it. Ive seen some super low mileage ludes pop up.

Re: Timing belt

Wegz, yeah, really haha. The thing with timing belts is that the less you drive the car, the more it probably needs to be changed. When the car sits for multiple days/weeks/months, it gives the belt a chance to dry out and get brittle. You don't really have to worry about that when you drive the car on a regular basis though.
