Need some repair advice (1990 Si)

So, I'm pretty new to the forum, and just as new to automotive work, so please bear with me on this.

My 1990 Lude is having some difficulties. For a period of time, it wouldn't start. My friend told me that I should replace the Distributor cap/rotor/spark plug etc. I did, and the car started up just fine.

I drove it for a bit, and then parked it. I didn't need to use my car for quite some time, so it ended up sitting for a while. When I went to start it the next time, it was dead. I decided that the battery was old enough to replace. I installed the new battery, and the car fired up. I drove it around, and it died at the bottom of a hill. I got it home, and it sat for a while again.

It was quite low on gas, so I gave it some gas, and got it jumped. Once again it started up just fine, but then soon after, would not start.

Flash forward to now, and most of the time the car cranks, but will not fire up.

I looked around on the forum a lot, and decided to try and do some diagnostics.

As far as I can tell, the fuel pump works.
I listened for a hum in the gas tank when the key was turned.
I checked the fuse
I listened for the click of what I believe was the fuel pump relay?
Everything checked out

I then tested for spark using a really long screwdriver
Everything was sparking healthy

Also, while I was doing these tests, the car fired up just like there was no problem at all. The day before, I tried to start it, and could never get it to do anything but crank. What the bleep!?!?!?

Anyone have some direction they could point me in?

Thank so much!

Have you checked to see if your getting fuel to the fuel rail? There should be a breeder valve or screw on the fuel rail somewhere. It could be as simple as a clogged fuel filter since you said it ran quite low on gas because it being an older car there is probably some trash that got picked up from the bottom of the gas tank and clogged the fuel filter especially of you've ran a fuel system cleaner in it before this problem started. Let us know what you find out

I'll give that a go and see if that is the ticket. Thanks!

Re: Need some repair advice (1990 Si)

Sorry for the double post. Just waiting on the roommate to come home so I can get him to turn my key for me.

Went out earlier and cleaned the battery clamps(?), and tightened them so they weren't loose at all. I don't think it really played a part, but the car did fire right up. It's frustrating to have your car fire up like new, and then other times just crank again and again.

Anyway, I'll update later.

Checked the pressure at the filter, as well as the rail (or what I surmise must be the fuel rail). Nothing really came out. Maybe just a tiny bit. So should I replace the filter then?

Thanks so much for the help!

Weird, so even though the filter may be clogged, it may start occasionally?

UPDATE:

Hmmm, maybe I didn't loose the right bolt...car ended up starting. Girlfriend pleaded for me to just take it to a shop, so I finally gave in and did. Should be interesting to find out what the issue was. Something easy I think. Car drove fine all the way there.

Didn't want to take it in, but I guess it's for the best.

Next thing I was looking into was fuel filter, and Main Relay...

UPDATE:

Well what the duce, they said they think it might be the main relay. That's where I was going next. Oh well. We'll see if that fixes it up.
