Starting problem

My wife is about to buy a new car if I can't figure out a starting problem with our 1989 Prelude Si - the car is great otherwise! This problem has been happening for months now. When the key is turned to the point the dash lights come on, and specifically the "Check" engine light, if there is not a "click" sound with the "Check" engine light, the car will not start. It will turn over, everything else works throughout the electrical but the engine will not fire. If the key is turned on/off several, sometimes numerous times, eventually you will here the "click" sound with the "Check" light and the car will start. This must be a sensor. The battery is new. Once started, everything is fine until it is turned off. I'd really like to keep this car - any help?
