Icon5 TEST PIPE

hi guys,

i just want to get some advice.
i searched some posts here and google about resonated/non resonated test pipes, cat converter, o2 sensor, etc.
some say test pipe makes the car either quieter, louder, or deeper. it makes confusing that some posts say test pipe is to "quiet things down" while others say it takes out the rasp tone. i never had a test pipe and i can't wait to have one to know how does it really affect a car.

my car is a 98 prelude 5th gen with stock intake w/ k&n filter, stock headers, stock cat, and Apexi N1 4" muffler. the sound that im looking for is LOUDER and DEEPER tone than what it is now.

what do i need to buy in order to get that LOUD and DEEP TONE?
do you recommend this items to achieve that?
Megan Resonated Test Pipe or Ebay Test Pipe? anything else i need?

thanks guys!

Re: TEST PIPE

test pipe = c.e.l. Their are ways around things I saw on the web to trick the computer tho so the light doesn't come on. By the way I had a test pipe on and my cel came on so now I got a high flow cat on and it sounds good with my exhaust.

Re: TEST PIPE

The "Test Pipe" is not a direct replacement for your
catalytic converter. Ive heard alot of stories of people
buying a test pipe because they are cheap and can
replace the CC. Well when you go to get it inspected it
automatically fails if the CEL is on. There are tricks and
ways around the CEL but seems to be a PITA in my opinion.

High Flow Cat is the way to go stay away from test pipes or
have a second exhaust set-up to swap in when inspection time comes!

how is it not a direct replacement for the cat converter?
hmmm i search some info's saying it can be placed to where the CC is at.
unless i searched wrong
if the TP is not a direct replacement for CC. where can the TP get placed?
also i found some ways to turn the CEL off with SP defouler.

one thing about high flow cat is they are a little pricey (magnaflow high flow CC) than the Megan resonated TP.

thanks for the replies

Re: TEST PIPE

by "Direct "Replacement" I mean functionality included.
It is not a Catalytic converter. Your car becomes
immediately illegal to drive on the road when you install
a test pipe. Thats why all the descriptions for test pipes
say "for off-road use only".

Re: TEST PIPE

If you need a catalytic converter, stop by a parts yard and get one. You can purchase one by the measured dimensions and horsepower rating also.
A high flow cat is just buying a suv or truck catalytic converter with a wider overall diameter. That is why it's expensive, but there is minimal sound restriction.

Test pipe is only used to complete an exhaust and insure the vehicle motor is working.

Re: TEST PIPE

if you want a deeper tone. get a resonator or 2 or a GOOD muffler I.e. anything not N1 style. a test pipe will make your car a tad bit louder and maybe raspier, considering its pretty much just a tube with flanges on either end. there's no sound deadening in one at all

Re: TEST PIPE

Secondary o2 sensor and on occasion something else. Which is enough to fail inspection in most states - and test pipes cause the car to smoke more and have more rasp.
