98 sh heating/cooling issue....please help.

I just bought a 98 black sh from buffalo new york. the car has 137k and is having some issues with the climate control. ok. when i was arranging the buy of this car with the previous seller he told me all it needed was the ac recharged and new tires. So on my drive home with it i tried the ac just to see how bad it needed a recharge. It was blowing out so hot that you would have thought the heat was on full blast. In all my experiences with cars, even when it needs recharged you could still feel the air was somewhat cool just not quite cool enough to get the job done. also, when i turned everything off. i still had "hot" air coming out of the vents. the air didn't have that much force to it. It was just under what lowest speed of the fan in terms of "force of air". I tried everything to try to get it to stop. The temperature is all the way on cool. the fan speed control is in the off position. also Im not sure the compressor even works because when you turn the ac on while driving you dont get that slight hesitation upon starting it up that cars get when the compressor first engages. So i hope i explained the issue thoroughly enough without dragging it out too long. If anybody has any experience on this and can let me know what my first couple of steps should be or better yet, know whats wrong.......please help me out and guide me in the right direction. Thank you

If its not kicking on at all, its the compressor, but I have the same problem with my a/c right now as far as blowing hot air and I tried the recharge yesterday. The pressure was perfectly normal but it still wasnt blowing cold. Mine kicks on though, so my problem was a little bit different :P. I still didnt fix it yet though.

he should of just charged it himself, its so easy to do. i tried it on my 99 sh and its ice cold now. plus the compressor wont kick on unless their is enough freon in the system. i dont know, give it a shot.

Re: 98 sh heating/cooling issue....please help.

The compressor uses the refrigerant as lubrication, so there's a 70/30 chance your compressor is done. I would also look into your air blending door being stuck on hot. Get the system professionally recharged, they can usually spot other problems like a bad dryer, leaks, and shot heater core, not in your case. I will never understand why people always let A/C and Oil changes slack. Air conditioning is a neccessity nowadays. You can charge 200-500 more on a sale because you have working a/c.

Anyways keep us updated f you go the DIY route.
