smell from headers? leak?

Hey everyone I drive an 00 lude and I've noticed recently that my ride suddenly started making noise which seems to be coming from the headers. There is also a smell coming from the same area which gets stronger when you step on the gas pedal. I'm not too definite if the smell is either gas escaping or just the exhaust fumes. Maybe a mix of both??
I would appreciate as much suggestions from you guys as you can. I want to fix the problems before they get worse. Thanks !

Re: smell from headers? leak?

IDE say you got a leak. I have one where my header bolts up which is just the gasket. Are you seeing any black residue anywhere?

Re: smell from headers? leak?

I haven't looked deep inside. I'm not sure if yours makes the same noise but mine sounds kind of like a tractor lol. Right where the header is.
I did some search and a possibility could be the intake manifold gasket. It seems to make sense but I wanted to make sure with others who know more than me before I start buying parts I might not need. Id spend time researching these problems but I strictly don't have time. College is time consuming x)
Thanks for your help by the way

Re: smell from headers? leak?

Do you have an aftermarket header? Your header may have cracked or did you bottom oh hard in the front? Take the heat sheild off and take a look. Gaskets are cheap so I wouldn't be worried to much unless you have a hole or crack in your header/ downpipe.

Re: smell from headers? leak?

No its bone stock. I was going to replace the header anyway. Just wanted to see if it was either bad header , bad front gasket , or the manifold gasket.
Ill be sure to check it out . I don't think I might be able to see very clearly though?
There is a possibility of the crack not being visible isn't there?

This^^^ I have a small exhaust leak in the same area, makes the head just under the valve cover look darker, kind of sooty.

Re: smell from headers? leak?

Yea man your right she is talking. Lol

Lindso: just to play it safe I'm going to replace the gaskets and header and possibly the downpipe .
One by one first to see what the problem was .
By the way, do you guys have aftermarket headers?
I was wondering if replacement can be a "do it yourself" kind of job

Re: smell from headers? leak?

I still have my stock header on the h22 but mine yeah it's a very easy job be careful when taking off the nuts for the first time they may be a bit rusted on there and you don't want to break a stud. I also gt the black soot on my head: / I clean it off when I gets noticeable.

Re: smell from headers? leak?

Replacing the manifold with a header is a very simple job.

To check for leaks, use some sort of smoke around the manifold flanges while your car is running. A leak will blow the smoke away in a certain location. Without the heat shield on, I might add.

I'm glad that went out. Now I have an excuse to buy headers lol.
Thanks guys.
One more question, have any of you guys felt with power steering pump issues?
Whether its re installing a new one or replacing the seals and o rings ?

I just installed one a few weeks ago on my girlfriend's Civic. Why? What do you need to know?

Also, it's "header," not "headers." There's only one.

Re: smell from headers? leak?

Gonna be replacing my ps pump that's why. Hoses as well.
Do you know the steps to replacing it. I have a clue on what to do but I just want to be sure .
Mainly with draining the fluid after removing the ps pump. Im guessing its safe to drain the ps fluid with the pump completely off?
Sorry for all the questions ...lol
Thanks
