Exhaust Suddenly (goes boom) Louder

So, I am driving home from work yesterday with my dad in the car... I'm turning onto a highway and decide to have a little Vtec fun in second.... As I am WOT just before the next shift the exhaust suddenly gets much louder (almost as loud as pre-resonator) and stayed louder (had a deep rumble to it, lol)... I figured something came loose so I pull off the road a little ways on and pop the hood to start my check at the header and work back. First thing I see is antifreeze leaking by the big upper hose that connects the radiator to the block. It actually seemed to start dripping faster as I watched it. I have not noticed a leak up to this point, and I am not sure if my fan is working, or how to check... my temp gauge is currently defunct as well (has been for months+, should have fixed it....).

I didn't see any problems with the exhaust, but I haven't gotten a good look at it yet... from there I drove it on a few miles to my dad's mechanic (since we were close) and had my wife come get us. I plan on looking at it again tomorrow and maybe drive it to my mechanic (dad's guy just had surgery for colon cancer and isn't working). I also did not notice any loss of power or other changes... car felt normal through the whole thing... but I was cringing anyway...

My questions...

How likely is it that heating up would cause the antifreeze leak rather than the other way around?

How likely is it that the exhaust getting louder has some correlation to potential overheating, due to a defunct fan or the leak??

30+ minutes after being parked, with hood up and 85F temp, the valve cover was still hot enough that I did not want to leave my hand on it... I've never paid enough attention to know it that's normal... thoughts???

Should I drive it to my mechanic (<10 miles.. checking coolant level first, of course...) or just have him tow me????

Thanks.

i wouldnt recommend driving it because who knows if you caught it before there was an issue. get it towed there so you dont gotta be going crazy during that drive.

This is the lower hose?

The system's under pressure when it's hot. Nearly all leaks happen hot rather than cold.

No idea...there's no obvious correlation there.

That's about normal. The engine stays hot for awhile.

Check the fan by turning the air con on -- both fans should run. For normal cooling with the air con off, only one fan (the passenger side, IIRC) runs off the thermoswitch, and the best time to check it is right after you shut off a hot engine -- the fan will often kick on for a few seconds as the hot coolant stops circulating.

If it were my car, and the route wasn't full of stoplights, I'd drive it. If you have air blowing through the rad and there's adequate coolant in the system, you should be fine.

Its simple your exhaust isn't VTEC proof! In the end the EPICNESS of VTEC was just to much for your simple exhaust.

I THINK it would be okay to drive the short distance (as you said...), but I haven't decided what I will do for sure. I'll check out the fan... Luckily I got my climate controls fixed recently (haven't recharged AC yet) so hopefully it will work. Thanks for all the help... liking that facebook page was worthwhile, lol.

Re: Exhaust Suddenly (goes boom) Louder

Honestly, it sounds like an exhaust gasket blew out. Does your car burn any major oil amounts in VTEC? If so, you may have started clogging the catalytic converter and when you hit it again, it could have blown a weld or the gasket right before said cat.

Re: Exhaust Suddenly (goes boom) Louder

^It's a 2.5" magnaflow high flow metal substrate... kinda what I was thinking... if I don't see any other leaks I bet the inside fell apart, lol.... It's all welded together... oops.. lol

Crash... I change the oil RP every 3,000ish or ~6 months... it uses a touch, but I've never had to add any... bought the motor with <25k miles and I've put less than that on it since... never had any problems with it.

Thanks guys.

If it's leaking where the hose connects to the radiator, it may be a crack in the plastic header piece -- they sometimes crack at the stub that fits into the hose.

I need to do more with it. I'll have to put it aside for awhile, though -- I'll be gone most of the summer, so no autocrossing for a few months.

Re: Exhaust Suddenly (goes boom) Louder

^ I don't do jack on FB... this is where I go instead, lol...

I limped the car to the mechanic... damn does it sound loud and obnoxious having to pull a hill from a stop... lol... I was getting looks and was a little embarrassed (wife was following... at a safe distance in case any chunks of catalyst came out the back, lol). car didn't seem extra hot or anything on the way in... checked the coolant level before going... it could not have been leaking long as it was still pretty full (didn't add any)... I'll see what he says and decide what to do from there...

Oh yeah... I did turn on the AC and no fans came on... I have not had it recharged since I got the climate control fixed, so I am not sure if my compressor is any good... would that matter?

If I have to start replacing any exhaust parts I am going to be tempted to go ahead and get a hytec rep. and 3" exhaust (my ceramic header doesn't look so good after a few years... superficial rust and what not; I've wanted a better header ever since I got my tune...).

Watch your mpg fly right up now that your car is loud. I thought it could be clogged exhaust, but how often does that happen right? Check your mpg, and get back to us about the coolant, LOL!

Re: Exhaust Suddenly (goes boom) Louder

lol... could make sense I suppose... go figure...

My wife has been saying the car had a different tone since we got it back from the motorsports shop after the tuneup a while back,... I could not really tell, and I had a few things done, so I didn't think much of it... maybe she was on to something (though the fuel economy problem started a good while earlier than that)... she has a great sense for cars... her grandpa was a mechanic and taught her a lot.

I'll let you know how all these issues work out and maybe we'll see a correlation or two.

My h23a1 used a quart of 20w50 every 900 miles or so when I pulled it (it was rough when I got it, I'd never do that to a car... granted it went 198,000 miles).

The compressor shouldn't make a difference to the fans. Could be a bad A/C switch. Could be a bad ground to the fans. Could be bad fans (although it's pretty unusual for both to die at once). You'll probably have to pull the fans out and test them -- they're just bolted to the rad.

Re: Exhaust Suddenly (goes boom) Louder

Since these problems don't seem to have anything to do with my poor fuel economy, I guess I'll direct the conversation back over to my thread on that... Running out of gas = problems? I might try using sea foam and see if my mpgs increase...

Coolant leak was just the hose going bad... I was happy for that...

Exhaust issue was caused by a hole in the flex pipe... seeing as I don't have the money for a hytec replica right now I guess I will just have to get it fixed... sounds like sh!t...

Since the hytec rep. only has a 2.5" collector, I guess I could scrape the money up for it as long as I won't have to change the rest of the 2.5" exhaust... want to go 3" at some point...
