Bad gas mileage?? And hesitation problem!!!

Ok I have terrible gas mileage. I don't know why. I have no clue what it is. But I own a 96 prelude with a jdm h22. It seems to run ok except sometimes it has a hesitation problem and sometimes it doesn't idk it's weird. But that's the only prob. I feel like I have terrible gas mileage though I only get on avg 13 to 15 mpg. Shouldn't it be like in the mid 20 or so. If you need info to help me out let me know. Oh if you know anything about the hesitation prob let me know PLz. It's really annoying. Thank you

Re: Bad gas mileage?? And hesitation problem!!!

The hesitation sort of sounds like ignition. Dizzy, plugs, wires or all the above.

There are literally 1000 things that can effect fuel milage. Things like air temperature/density, weight in the car, tyre pressure/compound, how you drive, where you drive, etc.

Re: Bad gas mileage?? And hesitation problem!!!

yeah.. could be one of many problems. a cheap and easy maintenance you could do is clean your throttle body, make the air/fuel mixture more accurate. maybe your EGR plug is clogged, your exhaust system is weak.

the hesitation could be your alternator, or even as simple as a loose battery cable

100% sounds to me like you need a tune up.

Re: Bad gas mileage?? And hesitation problem!!!

Idk if this matters or not but I notice that my gas gauge will not read correct or something. The other day I went some where with a half a tank. Then I'll be driving and it will go down a couple of bars. Then I'll get back in the car later and it will have half a tank again. It's been doin a lot lately. So what exactly wrong with my fuel gauge. By the way thanks for the help.

I agree with Smok3y. Start with a tune-up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, the standard stuff. If the engine light isn't on, then it's not a sensor. A hesitation can be anything from bad spark plugs (not firing properly) to a clogged fuel filter (not getting sufficient gas) to a blocked air filter (not enough air), with a lot of things in between. But start with the basics. I'm one of those old fashioned guys who diagnoses problems based on the three necessities of an engine: fuel, air, spark. If one ain't right, the engine won't run right. Find which one and you'll find the problem and it becomes an easy fix.

Re: Bad gas mileage?? And hesitation problem!!!

Ok. So I bought a fuel filter for the car since that was the oldest thing on there that needed to be replaced anyways. Nothing changed. Also I have a engine code 9. Also my fuel gauge is acting up on me. I'll put 3/4 of a tank in then I'll be driving and it drop a few bars then later it will go up. What do y'all think?

I experience the same, but I think the bar only changes depending on how the car is levelled to the ground. I've noticed that if the car is going downhill, the sensor inside the gas tank shifted and it thinks that the fuel inside decreases, and going uphill is the opposite.

For gas mileage, maybe the clutch needs replacement too. If your car is auto, then ignore this and consider a tune up like they're saying.
