Thanks to ideas like this, I decided to have a look...

simple fix...

bolt-washer-hole in pedal-tooth washer-nut...

I just put a small bolt in there, made sure it was the right height, tightened it up, and BOOM, it's fixed...

If this metal on metal switch is a problem, or if there are other reason(s) I should not have done this, please advise!

too bad the mice are ****ing back and my fuel economy sucks...

OP:

Okay, so I came home from work today... went out a couple hours later and noticed my lights were on... turns out it was the brake lights... a quick internet search suggested this problem is common, but not limited to Honda... I didn't notice a thread on it here at PZ yet, so I figured I would post this up since many of us drive old beaters! For now I just unhooked the battery... it's pretty new.

Looks like I need a brake light button/switch... Anyone have pics for the 4th gen? I think I might just get it at the Honda dealership for about 5 bucks... we have a gift card to use there...

Ugh. Same thing happened on my 5Gen. I don't understand how you could expect anyone to fit into that tiny ass spot and not come out hurt lol. (Of course I probably went about it all the wrong way.)

Re: Brake Lights Won't Turn Off!!!

did you check the brake switch? as stated above, the plastic part probably broke; you can probably fix it with a small bolt, nut and a couple washers.

Re: Brake Lights Won't Turn Off!!!

just want to let you guys know when i worked at honda i did about 3 of these brake lights are on and 3 out of the 3 that came in it was the plastic piece that comes off the pedal and engages/disengages the brake pedal switch. yes you can fabricate it with a bolt and what not but over time this plastic piece sees many many times of absue simply replacing it with a fresh one will do the trick (our dealership honda had 5 in stock and when 1 was purchased 1 was ordered) i can imagine that any honda near you will have this plastic piece also referred to as a plunger. it slides right in here its supposed to be and gives minimal problems and customizing... then problem is solved until about 10 years later im sure but beats fabrication in all ways in my opinion and if i havent said yet the part was only 50 cents customer cost and i put it in for free.

Re: Brake Lights Won't Turn Off!!!

Damn... I thought it was at least 5 bucks... I was going to swing by Honda and see if I could get one, but I looked at it and decided there was not much point... Thanks for the info though... I'm not sure the the metal on metal is good for the little pin/button in the long run.

Right now I need a new flex pipe (and maybe header), and a new JTC shifter (mine just broke)... So I guess I feel pretty good about the brake switch being fixed anyway, lol... Thanks again for the info.

Re: Brake Lights Won't Turn Off!!!

Hey, Guys. Didn't want to start a new thread, but I'm having the same problem, and I think the same solution will work. I'm curious though, my car is a 5th gen and I found broken pieces of plastic on the floor, which I think are pieces of the brake stopper, I just wanted to know how easy is to install and if it is any different than the ones talked about above because I have a 5th gen. Thanks.

Re: Brake Lights Won't Turn Off!!!

Usually this is caused by your brake light switch getting stuck. Look under the dash and you should see a button that gets pushed when the brake pedal goes up. See if the button can move freely.
