advice on what paint to buy

I'm getting my car repainted and I want to know what paint is good quality for a reasonable price. Also, what are all the coatings I need to buy?

I have no idea whats anything is when it comes to paint so any input would be much appreciated haha

Re: advice on what paint to buy

Darn the only brand i know is Dupli-color. I recommend calling O'reillys and asking them they sell paint their and know alot about it. Asking what brand they use is key to helping you choose.

Re: advice on what paint to buy

reds gonna be more expensive. I've never used the parts store's paints before but I'd be kind of wary of them.. I hear they're pretty thinned out..

I've used Nason paints (made by Dupont) and I love it. run into your local paint shop and ask what they offer.

Re: advice on what paint to buy

I've been looking at the Dupont standox or whatever it is. How much does the Nason typically run for the primer base and clear coat... rough estimate? (i think those are all the coats I need, correct me if im wrong lol)

Re: advice on what paint to buy

Paintscratch.com will match any factory color. I'm not sure exactly where they manufacture their paints, but would be worth checking out. also, House of Kolor is one of the top aftermarket paint manufacturers, but it comes with a hefty price tag. My friend used HOK for his truck that he took to the SEMA show. Also my boss/friend is using HOK for his current truck build.

Side note: most people say that the prep stage is more important than the paint. Depending on what type of color you're going with (pearl, metallic, flat, gloss), you may want to consider getting it straight from the dealer.

Personally, I wouldn't trust something that important with O'Reily/autozone paint. Also, they are not paint specialists, so i'm sure they probably cannot even explain the process correctly. Just my opinion

Re: advice on what paint to buy

O'Reilly carries Nason Paint...??? I can explain the process. I don't know the process completely, but I've patch-painted a few teacher's cars in high school autobody, lol. I've always used PPG with excellent results. They're expensive for some colors, but well worth it, especially if you feel like springing for waterborne paints as they don't vary color-wise between panels if coated separately. The only difference is the flex agent used on the bumpers, they have a tendency of causing slight shade variations. Use a good Urethane clearcoat and maintain it well, it WILL pay off.

Re: advice on what paint to buy

I was thinking about PPG and just getting the primer base and clear coat from them but getting urethane base too. I want to get as close to the original paint color that I can but the facking websites are confusing as hell lol. Correct me if im wrong on any of this stuff cause I have no clue when it comes to paint!

Re: advice on what paint to buy

I can't remember the last time I bought stuff from Bumper to Bumper (the supplier of Nason and dupont around here) but the next time I run by I'll check

do some research on how to paint a car. it's really easy if you know what you're doing.

Re: advice on what paint to buy

Go to a Body Shop distributor and ask for some. Personally, Tempo makes Some good Ultra Enamel paint, In satin, Gloss and Semi. AKA outdoor paint. Colors are Limited, but the car I'm painting sees rock salt and snow.

Try living with Phantom Black Metallic or Night Hawk Black Paint and you'll know what I'm talking about. I've lost faith in new finishes, leaves on a windy day can expose primer.

Re: advice on what paint to buy

Look up your car's color code, then take it to a body shop and have them try to color-match it, or simply have them order the paint.

Re: advice on what paint to buy

Hi... Just go with the regular colours. Don't go with the metallic colours they are more expensive. Don't repaint with the paint gun directly just do practice on normal things.
