Icon10 Has Anyone Actually done this?

I'm planning on getting some one piece JDM headlights for my BB4 but i'm short on cash and going to instead invest in other parts for now. But for now im planning on opening OEM headlights and simply painting them with the Duplicolor shadow paint or just flat black paint(will tape up the reflective area so that it still lights at night time). Has anyone actually done this before? Are their any pics?

Re: Has Anyone Actually done this?

I saw it once years ago... It wasn't on here (it was on SFPOA, teres a link at the bottom of the homepage) but it turned out really nice. He just used flat black paint and he got some black housed corners to match. It looked like it was just an option for the USDM model kinda how the original RSX had chrome or black headlights. I say go for it.

Re: Has Anyone Actually done this?

You can do this with nearly any headlights.

Bake headlights @ 350F for 5-10 mins (all you need to do is to warm up the silicone holding the lense to the housing), pull apart, mask, paint, reassemble.
And if it weren't for them being two pieces, they look VERY similar to actual JDM 1 piecers, and much more cost effective as well.

Re: Has Anyone Actually done this?

The only thing im still wondering is whether to get the Flat black or the Shadow chrome kit. And i will be adding Amber Corners from ebay instead of black ones.

Re: Has Anyone Actually done this?

MY FIRST POST ON PZ!!!!!

But to answer your question yes. I have a Z28 camaro that i have been looking into doing it to because i cant find any non rice looking lights that i like but i just picked up my first lude and it has been done to it already. I asked the previous owner how he done it. He said he used the VHT spray smoke and it looks really clean. (he sprayed the outside he did not open them up).

I was talking to a Good friend of mine and he he a damn good paint and body man and he has smoked many tail lights and a few headlights. after watching him do this many times and talking to him about doing my camaro's headlights he was saying that on the headlights he has done it is tough because you have to get them DARK because the black has a purple tint to it when the lights shine through it. The lude i just got looks really good but dose have some purple to it when the lights are on. My buddy also uses clear coat and some basic gm black i thing u8885 or something like that mixed in with it and sprays a few coats.

same way he has done many tail lights including mine on the Z28.

Sry for the long reply just wanted to be informative and sry to the refrences to my Z i love it and am a huge fan of the LS motors. The lude is also the first honda i have owned but by far not the first i have worked on.

It can be done this way but think about the elements outside. Snow, ice, rain, bugs and rock scratches. My bet is they wont look good for long. Atleast inside the housing they are protected from any thing that can scratch the paint. I have done tail lights with vht night shades and after so long they look dull and faded.

As for the clear coat you were talking about we have done that many times as well fill the paint cup with clear and reducer then a 2 table spoons on desired color and spray it on. It gives it the transparent effect.

Welcome to PZ by the way!

Re: Has Anyone Actually done this?

We have used a heat gun. NOT A BLOW DRYER!!! LOL Oven works best though.

Re: Has Anyone Actually done this?

An oven gives a completely uniform heat distribution, whereas a heat gun is basically isolating the heat to a very small area, increasing the risk of melting the plastic.
