Can't downshift

I have a 5th gen lude. I can't downshift into 2nd or first gear until I slow down to a certain speed, even if I match the Rpms. I put the clutch all the way in but the shifter won't go into the 2nd or 1st gear slot and I don't want to force it. I think it's either the clutch or the synchronizers. I have read multiple treads about the 5th gens having synchron. Problems. Any thoughts. Btw I can go from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd with no problem... It's just downshifting.

Re: Can't downshift

I know both my 4th gens wouldn't let me downshift into first until i was slowed down, don't know positively but my thought was that it was just a fail safe so dumba$$ kids didn't blow their sh*t up. lol. But 2nd or 1st? could be a linkage problem or synchros, maybe someone who actually has a 5th gen will reply eventually.. good luck bro.

Re: Can't downshift

Sounds like your Honda preventing you from destroying it as best as it can. Pretty standard safety mechanism.

Re: Can't downshift

At what speeds are you trying to downshift at?? If you are going 20 or 30 then theres no way in hell your gonna go to first... Why would you want to anyways? Just wait till you get down to speed and when you're ready to accelerate then shift. Don't be stupid and f*ck your car up!

Re: Can't downshift

My local Honda tech said there wasn't a safe lock on the preludes that keeps me from overreving, and I shift to first when I get to a slow crawl or my rmp drop below 1500 or so... I don't think it would be the clutch so I'm thinking it's the synchros...

Re: Can't downshift

i usually have to come to almost a complete stop before i can get my 5th gen into first easily. not so much second though.

Re: Can't downshift

Same. I usually cant downshift to 1st unless Im going like 5 or 10 mph or stopped lol. Why would you want to. 2nd never really was a problem but think before you downshift, in low gears its not about rev matching. Our cars dont pull as hard until 3rd :D

Nope, it's simply what Randall said. You shouldn't be shifting into 1st from any faster than ~5mph.

Re: Can't downshift

You should only be shifting into 1st when at a complete stop!

If you continue to have trouble shifting into 1st while in motion then I'd suggest you invest in one of these and maintain at 88mph...
