Rpm jumping in idle/ticking noise near alternator and p/s pump

So i recently installed new spark plug wires and a test pipe so i had it sitting for a while when i got done and went to start it, it struggled to turn on but did eventually start. The rpm gauge would go from 1000- 2000 and go back down it would do it over n over, i let it warm up and after a while it would no longer do it. I also heard like a ticking noise near the p/s pump and alternator i thought it was the belt loose on the alternator so i adjusted it but it was still there and the p/s belt is tight. Can anyone give some advice on wut to check or wut to do.

Check your timing belt tensioner

Check all the grounds and go back over your work. It's unbelievable how simple some solutions turn out to be. My car was crippled for 5 months because of a single freaking groundwire that was screwed on but not down all the way. My tach would erratically jump and then my engine eventually died once it warmed up.

Exact same problem, TPS. Fixed it. Still ticks alittle but they all do to an extent.

Ticking is most often from the valves, needing an adjustment.

Yeah I had my valves adjusted a month ago or so I was referring to the idle problem mostly :P

thanks for the replies guys. i had my valves adjusted bout month ago, and when i turned the car on after the adjustment i had no problems. i still had the hard start but no idle problem or clicking noise. i started the car the other day and now the clicking noise is gone but still got a hard start and idle still a little jumpy. keep ya'll posted

ok so i finally found the prob, i had vacuum hose broken on the iab so i replaced all vacuum hoses. i still have a hard start though when i turn the key i have to give it sum throttle and it will start then i have to give it gas while it warms up if i dont it will bogg out and wanna cut off. what could the problem be? any ideas? maybe fuel pressure regulator?
