Oil in Coolant.. I think?

so my 96 civic ex is burning oil. except now i think its going somewhere else as well. i've been checking my coolant fairly regularily lately and yesterday i checked the overflow reservoir and the coolant was lower again and there was a lot of black.. which i'm pretty sure was oil. i cleaned it out and filled it again. but, is this a sign of a bad head gasket? oil getting into the coolant? thanks yall.

Re: Oil in Coolant.. I think?

If it's oil, bad gasket, cracked head or block. Oil will be on top of the coolant, though -- if you're just getting black crud off the sides of the bottle, it's probably sediment from inside the radiator. Oil's pretty unmistakable -- if you're not sure what to look for, pour some coolant into a cup, add some oil to it, stir it around and let it sit for a few minutes.
