Icon11 You're Smart, I'm Not, please help

Ok so here is the situation. I'm 18 years old, on a tight budget, getting a job soon. I'm hoping to make about 400-500 bucks a month til summer then making way more. I am interested in getting a prelude and spending about 4-10k on buying the actual car. The main thing i want to know is this. I want to put some work into it. I do not know much about cars in general. As far as performance goes, i just want a few small mods that will help with acceleration. If you have any suggestions on small performance mods, leave them here for me with name and price and of course, what the mod does cause im a n00b. As far as exterior/looks go, i plan on getting decent rims, nothing too flashy, nice sounding exhaust tip,a lip kit, and some cool headlights. Again i need suggestions on items/pricing, and generally what goes into lowering a car, brands etc. Interior, maybe a small sub, and definitely an aux port for mp3's. Any help in any way at all is appreciated, except if you get on here lol and..."torment my soul" and talk about some ricer ish or whatever. I just need a mentor here to take me under their wing. Lemme know your thoughts, peace.

Re: You're Smart, I'm Not, please help

It's going to really boil down to what year/model you're looking at and how much you're willing to spend overall on the project.
From my own personal experience over the years with my 5th gen I'll say this; the H22 isn't that responsive to simple bolt-ons. Most people will start with the standard intake, header, and exhaust but even after those you may see a 10hp gain. That's considering affordable parts I guess to say, if you're willing to dump serious cash into a Hytech replica header and a full out custom exhaust then you'll see some more gains, but that's a matter of a more in depth conversation.

Now, if you're serious about building some real power my suggestion is to study up on N/A builds and F/I builds. The H22 is a very good platform for N/A builds, but it will cost some serious cash. I don't really know much about F/I (turbos and superchargers) so I'll let someone else more knowledgeable comment on that if they wish. I will say though that if you decide to drop the cash on either build type, remember one word, "Tuning". If you're looking for serious power, then you will absolutely need a good tune to go along with it. There's plenty of posts and conversations on here for all of the above. Just read up and research everything you can. If you have any simple questions, search first, there's a good chance it's already been talked about.

The personal appeal to me about the Prelude is the handling. These cars love a good, sharp corner. I'm surrounded by a lot of empty farm land with paved roads and in the summer we have quite a few companies around that host auto-x events, so that's where I spend my time and money at.

As far as stereo equipment goes, I've always trusted Kenwood. I probably spent $200 on my receiver and it handles everything I need it to do (mainly I just wanted one with aux inputs in the back so I can run my XM radio unit, and I wanted a USB cord I could run to the glovebox so I can store my external hard drives in there). Crutchfield.com is a good website to look through for ideas and has very helpful customer service reps.

Good luck on buying your first 'Lude. You'll love her.

Re: You're Smart, I'm Not, please help

Wassup and welcome to the world of preludes.
I'm glad you have priorities and a plan. That is more important than any car purchase, to avoid complications and junk. I was playing grand turismo on the psp just a minute ago, with which car? Prelude Platform, which ever generation will always bring a smile to your face. And you came to the right place.

Now in terms of spending, No prelude, should cost more than 5,000 dollars, unless there is a premium add on that may interest you, Like it comes with turbo already, so 20,000k on the odometer and other sillyness. First and foremost, choose your transmission, automatic or manual. All the purists say Manual, Honda made the Autos weak for some reason. If you can't drive manual, learn first, then start looking.

Which generation you want is the next thing. 3RD generation would do this old soul proud, but tuning is difficult. best handling of all the preludes due to Four Wheel Steering, Also difficult to find. 4TH generation is the introduction to the VTEC Engine, the H22. there is 4 wheel steering too, but MUCH harder to upkeep. Lots of parts available and easier to tune. And plenty of support here. 5TH generation was the last, and IMO the one you can convince mom and dad to buy. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the generations.

Tuning? It's bullsh!t. Doesn't make sense to make your car faster, when you don't even know what it's capable of. Hater's will hate on you and you need to ignore them. When you are making 4000.00/month, then you can tune out your car. I'm exaggerating about your income, but my point is as long as it runs and it helps you make paper first, you should be happy. Reward your prelude as things break down, Like better tires, Springs, shocks, etc, etc. Keep it running and Use premium parts, and you'll be fine.

Have you decided which body yet?

Re: You're Smart, I'm Not, please help

dont even dream about any mods yet; lets face the facts - you dont have money.

so its pretty pointless us to give you any recommendations since you cant get them. budget builds are pretty pointless, you end up getting cheap crappy parts anyway since you dont money for good quality ones.

come back when you have a actual car + something like 3-4k's then we can really plan something nice together

You've come to the right place, just scroll down the home page and use the search button and you will find everything you need!
And sideswipe it really depends on where you live because in the SF Bay area you really can't find a good solid 5th gen thats not salvaged for less than 4500 lol

Re: You're Smart, I'm Not, please help

That's true, but a 4th generation prelude for 5k? Gotta be a very special car. Just did a quick glance over in NY CL, that is insane. There's even one ad like 7800. And that is without know what is wrong with the car. Very Surprised, I know our cars are worth it, but really?

ipark2012, read this thread when you have the time to help you make the right decision.

Re: You're Smart, I'm Not, please help

i've found you never get into any modifications without discovering something ELSE that's either broken, worn out to the point of ALMOST broken, or something that shouldn't be broken but found it's way into your line of sight as you were installing your new shiny *insert super go fast bolt on modification component here*

do your homework and research with these cars before you dive into one wanting it to go faster. you'll thank yourself at the end of the day. BY GOLLY i sure have so far, and i've only owned my 5thgen less than a month.
