I think I f*cked my clutch up

Long story short, I was cleaning my engine today because it was filthy, and I think that some of the oily crap I washed off of the rear of the engine near the distributor ran into the bellhousing of the transmission and contaminated my clutch. The rubber plug that's supposed to cover this hole up is missing on my car. After cleaning the engine, the car seemed to drive okay, but the clutch didn't quite feel right. Later on in the evening, I got on it in third and she began to slip. However, after leaving my friend's house just a few minutes ago, the clutch grabbed fine.

What I need to know is if the clutch got a bit of contamination, would it be possible that I can douse the clutch and flywheel with brake cleaner to get rid of any oils that may be lingering, or would this damage the clutch disk?

x2 My dad thinks my clutch just has oil on it. I didn't know there was supposed to be a cover for that hole. I'm such a noobie.

Re: I think I f*cked my clutch up

Emptied three cans of brake cleaner into the bellhousing with the clutch both engaged and disengaged, rotated the engine a few times while doing so... and she's still slipping. Oh well. Time for a clutch. $315 later and I have an Exedy OEM and Fidanza flywheel on the way.

Re: I think I f*cked my clutch up

When I replaced the thermostat on my Integra, I had to remove the starter to get to a bolt on the thermostat housing. Needless to say, all the coolant that had been held in by the thermostat and its housing spilled down the side of the block and into the bellhousing. After I buttoned it all back up and drove it for a little while to work the coolant bubbles out of the system, the clutch was slipping slightly but all the coolant eventually burned off the surface of the clutch friction disc and all was fine. You can normally let it burn off for a little while and it would work fine. Brake cleaner can be used but definitely not in excess amounts, as it will start to permeate the friction material and cause even more slippage as it slowly makes the material softer (so I've heard).

Just my $0.02

11109-PK2-010 SEAL, TIMING RUBBER $2.98
From Majestic Honda's website.

I took my car over to a friend's house today, and we took his car everywhere. Left his house about ten minutes ago, and she didn't slip one bit. It slipped on the way there. Strange. Seems to be heat related. That, or the brake cleaner had left some friction material/oil residue on the clutch/flywheel surface, and it had to burn off. We'll see what happens over the next couple days.

Re: I think I f*cked my clutch up

I hope its not serious. You could take a 1875watt or better blow dryer to it when it comes time to swap out the clutch. If it works, send the spare back or keep it JUST IN CASE

on another note:

LOL Lex Luthor?

Also, what is this 10,000th post business?

Also, she didn't slip this morning. My last Honda that had a clutch problem was retarded too.

Nope. Upon inspection, it is I who screwed the proverbial pooch on the amount of zeros listed.
