Finding DOHC VTEC auto trans engines plus a general question.

This is NEW MEMBER POST. Please accept me.

I am a new owner of a 97 base Prelude, automatic.

I hear a lot about doing engine swaps to manual transmission. But is it possible to swap my 97 DOHC VTEC for a new (or newer) jdm DOHC VTEC with an automatic transmission? Where can I find these engines with automatic transmissions?

my general question: Is the engine and the transmission type(auto or manual) a separate entity or are they one and the same? IE automatic transmission engines or manual transmission engines.

Does anyone understand what I'm asking. If so, please share. Thank you.

Re: Finding DOHC VTEC auto trans engines plus a general question.

Welcome mate.

The trans is a separate entitiy from the engine, so one can be changed without the other, etc.

You'll likely cop a lot of people on here telling you to swap in a manual - ignore them if you like. The auto transmission (sometimes referred to as SS - sports shift) have a known reliability problem, and there are many cases of them failing prematurly. Even the one fitted to my car with it's constant maintenance and careful driving has had it's best days. Swapping to a reconditioned trans isn't necessarily a cheap exercise, which is why most swap to a manual as it's marginally more effort and can be relatively cheap when compared to the possibility of the reconditioned trans failing in the future. (Which has also been documented heavily)

If you're set on obtaining a later ss trans, then any JDM engine importer should be able to hook you up. (Where are you? If stateside then hmotorsonline et al. should be able to help, run a quick search on here)

There are stories of the autos running different cams to the manuals to enable them a similar response through the sluggish torque converter but in all seriousnuss, aside from the flywheel the automatic and manual engines are the same specification wise.

Just one thing: Swap in a manual

In addition to better reliability, a manual transmission is just straight fun on a Prelude.

I wish I would have swapped to a manual instead of having my auto rebuilt. But every time i sit in traffic I'm glad I didnt. Make your own call, just know the auto is know for issues. Though most issues are 97-98. 99-01 still fail just not as fast.

Yeah I unfortunately own an auto and catch a lot of flack for it. I wish I had an 5spd or the time to do a swap right now, but it's not. So Im loving what I got for now. My advice is to ignore all the flack you're going to get and enjoy your Prelude!

Re: Finding DOHC VTEC auto trans engines plus a general question.

as an auto lude owner we are few, a dying few, a band of brothers (an some sister's lol)

DONT EVER DO A TRANNY FLUSH!
jus drain an replace with HONDA ATF!!!!!!!!!

An many shop cant rebuild a prelude auto tranny so ur better off contacting a company directly like wut was said earlier.

Also very important put a tranny cooler on that car. I dont kno ur driving style but trust me its very good to have to keep ur tranny going longer.

I'd like to know, besides swapping to a 5spd, has any one figured out a way to make an auto more reliable? Inline cooler is a way, but what causes it to go belly up in the first? I have 85% of the parts for a swap, but would like to rebuild the auto.

Re: Finding DOHC VTEC auto trans engines plus a general question.

^I agree with that, but It has something to do with the close tolerances involved in the transmission, and some heat issues. They rushed it into production to compete, and so they never really got a chance to fix it. The 99-01's are a good bit better(my condolences to those of you who might plead otherwise). It depends on who the previous owner was, really. If he was a kid, (16,17,18), my guess is he was hot dogging it a lot. If it was an elderly person, than you're probably pretty safe from all that.
