Engine bogs

Hey, here's my issue;

After my 96 prelude srv first warms up the engine will bog down and hesitate when the throttle is not fully engaged - generally between 1.5-4k range. As soon as I step on it there is a slight hesitation then a surge. Car will generally operate fine after 10-15min of driving - though problem occasionally comes back. If I turn the car off the problem comes back immediately - usually worse than it was before. Car has had this problem for 5 months or so but its getting worse.

p0171 - engine lean. Came up once in cold weather(-5C) at startup. Has not come back.

p0302 - misfire cylinder 2. Came up once in Hot weather(30C). Has not come back.

I hadn't worried about it too much as I have a parts car and spare engine(donor engine is jdm in a domestic obd1 shell) I was planning on swapping. But, I haven' had the time or space and it's too bloody cold now. I'm also due for an etest now...and there is no way it will pass under these conditions.

Re: Engine bogs

I've recently replaced the fuel filter. And tried disconnecting and plugging the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator. Also added another ground cable directly to valve cover.

Also, for the last month the idle has fluctuated very slightly(assuming this is iacv).

My goal is just to get it through etest so I can do the swap at a more convenient time. I only need the car a few times a week and rarely for long trips.

*edit*
Just cleaned out the egr valve and replaced the gasket. If anything problem is worse.

Also, car hits vtec fine. Pulls hard with throttle wide open.

Re: Engine bogs

I`m having same or similair problem on my 5th gen. -_-Does your idle drop when you go netral or come to a stop? The boggy feeling comes and goes on my car. It started yesterday. -_-

Re: Engine bogs

Thanks,

I've reset the ecu a few times to no effect. Checked all the vacuum lines and there does not appear to be a leak. I'll try swapping map sensors tomorrow between cars and see what happens. I'm not sure if its possible between jdm obd1(firewall) and usdm obd2(TB). I'd check but there is a motorcycle in the way right now...Tomorrow.

Aced, my idle will drop maybe 100-150rpm briefly if I let off the throttle completely when in neutral. However, it returns to normal in less than a second. When the problem first arose it was intermittent - rare in fact. But, has gotten gradually worse. Over the last few weeks it seems much worse. But, I've hardly driven it over that time.

Re: Engine bogs

About to play around with the map sensor.

Got a ticket today due to this problem. Coming around a bend the engine started bogging down again. So I stepped on it...Cop just around the bend. going 95 in a 70...

Ended up just getting a ticket for invalid plate sticker. As I couldn't find my insurance papers at first. She wrote me a ticket for plate sticker and insurance - not speeding. But, I found the slip before she got back and she tore that one up. So just $110. This problem need to be solved!

On the plus side. My parts car has a 5th gen throttle body(map sensor disconnected) and the 4th gen firewall mounted map sensor. So off for a testdrive/temporary plate sticker.

Re: Engine bogs

Ok, problem seems to have gone away after swapping the map sensor. Idle still a little rough. But, I'll take it like that to the etest and see how it goes.

thanks for the input Aced and UR!

Re: Engine bogs

So, I had about 4 days of normal operation. Then on the way to the etest it had a hesitation twice. Idle got rough. It then failed the etest horribly.

HC 449(limit 64) Idle 2748(limit 200)
CO 10.06(limit 0.35) Idle 6.59(limit 1.00)

Passed NO with 62(limit 485) and all other tests.

Re: Engine bogs

I've moved onto the TPS sensor as a few other threads have come up with that as the problem.

Mine reads 0.5 - 4.3WOT(should be 4.5). Seems to fluctuate the voltage smoothly throughout all positions - did several tests. I'll try swapping it with my spare as soon as my gasket comes in. But, I'm pretty stumped here.

Any more ideas?

Re: Engine bogs

After your first post, I had an idea it was your TPS.
After your second post where you said it goes WOT perfectly fine, I had a VERY strong feeling it was your TPS. But you tested it, and it SOUNDS like its fine...

But if you have one laying around and feel like drilling the rivets out, I'd swap it just to be sure.

Re: Engine bogs

Well I'll keep my fingers crossed. Everything is prepped and cleaned. As a side note; My iacv was clean as a wistle. So my rough idle most likely something else. Just waiting on a gasket.

I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the opinion!

Re: Engine bogs

Swapped the tps and no change.

Tried seafoam for the first time(random thought). Car runs better and quieter - but no change. Did make some horrible noises for 15 seconds shortly after adding some to the oil - then quieted down. It really thinned the oil - wouldn't recommend running that for too long(a few k) before a change.

I'm pretty stumped here. Going to look for a conversion harness to try out my obd1 ecu(will eliminate knock sensor).

After that, I guess I'll start tracing wiring back. I am NOT looking forward to that.

Off for the weekend - partying and headstones concert. If anyone has any idea's I'd really appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

Edit; my compression is 190-200 across the board. plugs had both black(base near threads) and white(electrode) deposits.

Re: Engine bogs

Ok, well I tried swapping the obd2 ecu with an h22a obd1 ecu via obd2a->obd1 conversion harness. Took a short trip around a few blocks and the problem seems to have gone away(It was pouring and rush hour so I wasn't out long).

Now, however my idle jumps all over the place warm or cold.
