Some basic questions concerning trims/engines

hey everyone, first post, i am selling my lifted chevy pickup, the love of my life, next weekend, and driving out of state to pick up a 1998 Prelude. i have done a little bit of research into this, and cant find a definite answer. the prelude i am purchasing has Type S badges on it, but i have found that Type S preludes werent available in america, only the SH. is this so? does that mean he just stuck the badges on a more basic trim level? it has the DOHC VTEC but i dont know what size or anything. just something i was wondering about
thanks

Your right the type-s is a japan only car. the displacement of the motor is a 2.2 with 190hp and 160tq. If the type-s badges are jdm I would leave them It is kind of an upgrade. Is the car a sh model?

yeah i was looking at a JDM replica type S grille online to match it.
I dont know for sure, would i be able to answer that by giving you engine info, and then you translating that (assuming that different trims have different engine sizes [as you can tell i dont know squat about this - my brother has an cb7 accord so he's started to educate me but im learning, thats where you guys come in, helping me])
can i tell the original trim level by the VIN number? it is the dohc vtec like i said with tiptronic trasnmission if that helps

well all of the 5th gen lude(97-00) have the h22 dohc vtec. so the only way you can tell if the car is a base model or an sh is the atts light on the dash unless it has a type-sh badge on the back, oh and sh's only came in 5-speeds.

wow thats interesting, usually the engine size is the main difference between trims in most cars.
its the auto, so it must have been a base. the engine has been rebuilt and whatnot, so its definitely good to go for a while, since hondas tend to run for a good period of time.
on to another subject, where does a base level prelude stand in the 1/4 mile world when compared to other cars? whats the average stock or exhaust/intake/small stuff time (no turbos or chips)?

higherlevelauto.com/images/rides/prelude.html thats a webpage that i made yesterday for my brother to see pics of the car, its not to shabby looking, interior needs work, but nothing i cant do
also got the spoiler with teh led light and the light in the back window, so it must be base, but the SH spoiler added on

from what I have read the sh ran 15.7s the base with a 5 speed is faster(lighter) and the auto should be a little slower but im not sure on the time.

hum... have you ran a carfax or anything on that car? the hood is mis aglined like crazy and no front turn signals or front grill for that matter... but it does have the JDM side markers on it and type s badge and it looks to be lowered, hopefully by coilovers or decent springs and they wern't just heated or cut... but first things first if you get the car ditch that muffler on the back for a full system because it looks like it's just a muffler welded onto the stock plumbing..

yeah it had some front end damage, i was planning on buying some black housing turn signals anyways, so no big deal on taht
the lowering springs (1.5") are a really nice brand, i dont remember the name but he showed me the receipt, not a blowtorch job, and i found a replica jdm type s grill for cheap. i did ask about the hood, its a CF painted black, but he said it wasnt frame damage, but im suspecting there might be front end fram damage, considering the missing front lip, missing turn signals and the replaced hood. ill definintely have to run a carfax (hopefully tomorrow) and run it by a mechanic

That "type S" is just a decal/logo.
It seems like a base model to me...but you will never know until you open up the hood and check the engine block.

If you see a numerical value after the alpha letter, it's the US motor(most likely stock). For example, if it's a Japanese motor, it should read: h22a
If it's the stock motor that came with the car, it should read: h22a4.

^^ no need to open the hood and check the block...

If it's still got an automatic transmission in it, i'm 99% positive that you have a USDM motor. Even if it is a JDM motor, it's definitely not the Type S. There is no way that the Type S block would bolt up to an automatic transmission without HEAVY fabrication. I believe the Type S block would bolt up to the Type SH transmission, both have the same transmission code I believe... but even then, it would definitely be a 5 speed. If you have an auto trans in there, it's a base model.

If it's an SH, the VIN with start out "JHMBB615" and they all have manual transmissions so being a triptonic, you automatically know it's a base model, but it sounds like you've already figured out it's a base.
