I Need Some Guidance

I'm new to the import scene, as I'm more of an american muscle guy, and am looking to buy an '89 prelude with the B20A3/5 speed. I just need a few questions answered.

-Is this a good engine?
-What should I know about them, good and bad?
-What would be a good first cheap but efficient performance upgrade?
-Is there any advice on what I should look out for?
-Cherry Bomb or Magnaflow?

Re: I Need Some Guidance

I will post as soon as I get them. All I know is that its red, it's not an Si -obviously, since its the b20a3 and not the b20a4, and that the synchros are toast for first gear.

Re: I Need Some Guidance

Answer us these few questions also, Help us help you.
How many miles? Hows the overall condition of the vehicle? Synchros are a PITA btw, could be possibly alleviated a little bit by gm synchromesh fluid, but remember there is no magical fluid that can mask worn metal parts. Yes The engines are pretty sound as long as shes been maintained, previous owner maintenance is critical. To possibly see the internal condition of the motor will they let you do a compression test? Remember it is an 89, depending on whats already been done to it be prepared to sink some cash into her soon. "unless shes been maintained well"
As for good cheap performance upgrade, Its an 89, so unless they've recently gave her a tune up, id go with that right off the bat. (Distributor cap, Wires, Rotor, air/oil filter, oil change, spark plugs) Right there is your basic tune up.
And even if that's done, id say save your money till you can really do some mods on her.
As for what to look out for, go over the overall condition of the vehicle enlighten us some more on how many miles and if they've done any recent maintenance.

Btw Welcome to PZ =]

Re: I Need Some Guidance

Welcome to the 3G network. If you're looking for a dependable inexpensive drive the honda prelude is nice. As stated above, the previous owner will make or break the deal, service records are a must for the carburated prelude. It's a motorcycle with four wheels.

If you can get an SI, you have more options like 4 wheel steering and the last year 1991, anti lock brakes. I owned a 4ws si, never regretted it, worth the time finding one. We do require pics as we love seeing examples of our vanishing cars.

Re: I Need Some Guidance

Like I said, I will get pictures as soon as I can. It's not an Si, its an EX or LX or something to that effect. As far as everything goes, the synchros are going out because it is the original transmission with 180k miles on it. That, I'm not worried about. I have a friend who rebuilds old Honda's for a living. There is cosmetic damage, but nothing major. All things that a little metal work and some primer can fix. As far as I know, the car has been regularly maintained, regularly tuned, etc. It runs a carb (not preferably, but I can fix that with an efi kit.) I plan on pressure testing it right off the bat.
