want to kill this car right now....

Here's the story

I have a 4th Gen(1995) 2.2 non vtech standard transmission. It presented idle and hot start problems from the get go. I started researching and reading and was told to. Do certain things which I did. Ill list everything:

Replaced main relay
Removed and cleaned IACV
Removed and cleaned EGR (put on new gasket as well)
Replaced fuel filter
Replace PCV
Checked for vaccuum leaks(none)

Just before I bought it (march2011) the coil and distributor cap and plug wires had all been replaced so I'm sure its not that and I can hear the fuel pump running and working so i don't think its that either.
That being said, here's what's going on.
I try to start it and if it decides to kick over it will run ad idle fine for about a minute or so then the rpms will jump, car sputters and dies. After I let it sit. It will take numerous times to get it going again. After I try I'd say more then ten times it spits white smoke out of the intake and will start but then die immediately after. This leads me to believe there is a bad head gadget which I wouldn't think would be related to the other problems but then again I'm no mechanic. I have been told the Ecuador may also be bad. In another thread somebody had the same problem, let it sit overnight. And it was fixed come morning and had o further issues. Should I be pacient and see what happens or what should I do next? I'm stuck and can't afford to keep buying parts.

it sounds like you do have a blown head gasket. That white smoke, does it smell sweet?? If so your engine is burning coolent. also has the intake manifold been swapped or takin of before??

Re: want to kill this car right now....

The intake is cool air. The only modified part of the car. The smoke is rich. I didn't smell it... figured it was just fuel built up that finally spark and burned up but like I said, I'm no mechanic

Re: want to kill this car right now....

Please ignore the typos in the original post I meant head gasket. Not gadget and ECU. Not Ecuador. Sorry about that

Re: want to kill this car right now....

I was asking if the manifold has ever been removed not the cold air intake. The manifold is what the cold air intake is connected to. And i understand your not a mechanic. But the white smoke does sound like it is burning coolant to me. But have a compression test done to the car. I think the tool can be rented at a local auto shop for 10 dollars or somthing. Now with that being said a compression test will not give us a direct answer if the head gasket is blown or not because a low compression can be created by a bad piston ring or bent valve. But then again because the smoke is white Im sure that you have a blown head gasket. Hope this helps buddy

Re: want to kill this car right now....

Well I've read all this stuff and my car is not experiencing all of those symptoms. There is no oil in the water or water in the oil or oil in the antifreeze. I never smell antifreeze burning I usually smell oil burning though. The car is completely full on oil and antifreeze and is not losing either or. I can feel. Antifreeze running through the upper and lower radiotor hoses. There are no leaks anywhere, no water in the exhaust. If and when it does spit smoke it. Smells like oil, its not sweet. I know the timing is off but I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem. I just don't want to spend a ton of money on a head gasket kit and have it turn out to be something else. This car is PISSING. Me off!

You know the timing's off and you're wondering why your car runs like ****? Why don't you fix the timing? I'd do a compression test afterwards too like naj said and go from there.

Re: want to kill this car right now....

So here's. The update. Finally started it up about 40 minutes ago drove it around a bit, no surging, no dying. Killed it,started it up again,it started a little rough but fired up. Then I'm under the hood listening for. Things, smelling for things. I throttle it up and notice the throttle linkage is a little funky. It like goes a bit. Past where it should sit and I've quickly discovered that's why it bogged down. Can I tighten the linkageor what can I do to fix that part?

And by past where it should sit I mean it will go the opposite way (like when you let go it should rest at a certain spot but it goes a Tad further. Sorry if that doesn't make sense but I don't know how else to explain it.

Re: want to kill this car right now....

You can tighten your throttle cable.... if that's what you're talking about.

The wire that goes across your intake manifold and attaches to your throttle body- which controls the butterfly valve that allows airflow into the motor.

If you can post a picture of how it sits now, that would really help us guide you.
