Mechanic says I should get a new engine???

I brought my car in to get an oil leak and oil burn fix.

So my mechanic says that the oil burn can't be fixed and that I'm better off/cheaper selling or trading in the car.

Or either can put a new engine in.

What do you guys think? The engine has 147,000 miles on it. The oil burn isn't BAD, but noticeable and you can smell it.

I've been trying to reach bustr because he's kinda in my area but does he come on here anymore?

Re: Mechanic says I should get a new engine???

I don't know, that's why I brought it but after he told me that I figured I'd save my money and not even get it checked out. You think the oil leak could be related to the oil burning?

He said if I fix the oil leak it will it build build pressure up wherever the oil is currently burning in the engine and just make that worst, and so a no win situation.

sounds like you need to find a new mechanic.

and without details of where the oil is leaking, how much oil it leaks, how much oil it burns, we cannot help diagnosis the issue.

its normal for our engine to burn a little oil. Bustr has been busy with stuff. Are you in Long island?

Why's that bull?? The cost of tearing apart the entire block to replace the piston rings, new bearings, seals, and gaskets, is going to be well over 1K, which is what you can normally get a lower mileage JDM H22a for, in much better condition.

That's absolute horse-shiit. Burning oil and leaking oil are not related to each other at all. Leaking oil is usually leaking passed a seal or gasket. Burning oil is exactly that, oil getting into the combustion chamber (via either rings, or valve seals) and getting burned, then out the exhaust. Fixing the oil leak absolutely will not make the situation worse.

Re: Mechanic says I should get a new engine???

There's no oil leak that's going to cost you 1000, and it's common for vtec engines to burn oil. Do you have alot of smoke coming out the exhaust or is it more the smell of oil dripping onto the exhaust and you smell it burning. Maybe you could take a engine bay pic of where you see the leak or burning oil.

I'll bring the car somewhere else to get looked at and find out where the leak is coming from. It's more smoke out the exhaust, and I can smell the oil in the smoke if I put my nose to the exhaust. I also notice a small amount of oily mosture type residue at the tip of the pipe. If I hit the gas hard the exhaust is definately noticeable. I don't beat the car up so I figure it may be something thats just getting worn out.

Just in case it comes to this where can I find a used engine that would be reliable and would I be able to get anything for mine?

Re: Mechanic says I should get a new engine???

The best thing to do is have a compression and leak down test done. If you have low compression chances are you need new piston rings. The head can also cause oil burning issues with the valve seals and valve guids. It will be way cheaper to fix if it's the head. Never hurts to check craigslist surounding area for a engine might get lucky, i did.

Re: Mechanic says I should get a new engine???

The compression test will tell you how healthy the engine is and the leak down test will let you know where your loosing the power from. If you have bent valve or leaky rings the leak down will tell you that.

Re: Mechanic says I should get a new engine???

never had this happen to a honda, but once on my northstar i had a headgasket issue which had no symptoms other than oil burning and oil leakage, you could get lucky, although this is most likely a one in a million chance that its the head gasket. more likely bad rings or oil from a cam seal dripping on the exhaust.

lol most mechanics will bullsh*t to make money but if this is a problem with the piston rings it will be cheaper to find another motor for the car so it might not all be BS

Re: Mechanic says I should get a new engine???

I'm taking it somewhere else. A performance shop. He said it may be the valve seals. Also said that oil leak is most likely a definite fix. As far as internal burning of oil he said the head may need rebuilding if anything but in his experience a rebuilt head will require a rebuilt bottom to prevent blowing it. He said if I wanted to look into another engine my best bet for buck and quality is finding a "rebuilt for exchange" engine. Does anybody have any trusted sites to find a lude engine?
