Great place to start:
Official 3rd gen Resource Thread

3rd gens are notorious for burning oil and having other probs in that department. aside from a standard oil change, I don't know to flush it.

reverse lights:
Fuses good? Have you tested anything yet with a volt meter? any visual damage or other lights not working? Need more info. When I have more time, I'll pull up the schematic.

Ok, first check the NO. 13 fuse (10A) under your dashboard. If that is good, test/check the ground wires at the lights. They should be black. The Pos wires should be green w/ a black stripe. you can test those too if you want. If you still can't find the problem, you probably have a bad Back-up Light Switch. that would be really rare though. If you need help on how to test, just ask. Is it Auto or Manual?

You can see the troubleshooting part and diagram on Pages 16-142 and 16-143 of the Full Service Manual. download is on the link above.

well the car fortunately doesnt burn too much oitl..i dont ever have to top off..untill its time for me to change the oitl...i just see the new mobil 1 oil is **black** everyone says its a dirty engine and it should get a flush but some say its no go..and yes my car is a manual transmission...i have another 3rd gen i use for parts, engine's gone in that one..i tried swapping the whole back light harness but still nothing..i think it might be the fuse then...i will definitely take a look at it...thanks dude.

I had a very similar problem in which my reverse lights were Always on, it was the backup light switch on the transmission, get that looked at, cheap fix if you cant find it yourself, cost me like 25.
