Why is it running so rough?

I need any help I can get.
I've started working on my 91 2.0l dual carb 3rd gen and I'm really determined to get it running right but we (myself and my mechanic) are running out of ideas. Basically it's seriously down on power, I mean it struggles to get to 15mph, and there's a serious misfire. When it starts first it seems ok but after a few seconds you'll notice the engine give a slight kick and once it warms up the idle gets really bouncy and almost cuts out. If you drive it cold or warm it's dead and also if you rev it up it makes a serious crackling noise when it hits the high revs and it misses and backfires...
Any ideas on what could be causing this?

So far we have checked the carbs, distributor, ignition coil, sparkplugs, leads, exhaust and cat, and also did a compression test. I'm possibly forgetting something but can anyone shed some light on the situation? My mechanic has never had a car leave his garage unfixed and he's used to working on old cars, hot rods, etc but this is seriously baffling him...

Here's a video of exactly what's happening and the accelerator pedal is down to the floor the whole time, he's not pushing it down and releasing it several times like it sounds, until the very end obviously when he leaves it idle.

Re: Why is it running so rough?

The best thing to do an this will cure 85% of your problems is
Replace
Tps
Iacv
Fitv
Clean egr
Replace coolant with 50/50 make sure you bleed it properly

Trust me I've been there done that.
I'm aiming towards a vacuum problem/coolant problem

Re: Why is it running so rough?

Ya I'm thinking it could be a combination of problems but how expensive would replacing all them be do you think? I mean I've no problem spending money on it but don't want to be spending money unnecessarily, you know what I mean?

Also, could it be possible it's the fuel cut-off relay? I've nearly read the whole manual at this stage but I'm thinking that's the next thing I'll check. The test seems pretty straight forward.

If I took a video of what it's doing when it revs, etc, would that help ye possibly figure out what's going on?

Re: Why is it running so rough?

Ok, video added. Keep in mind that he has his foot to the floor constantly and held it there while he revved it but does it help any bit?

Re: Why is it running so rough?

Hey Aoife! Been ages! :huge hug: your carb Giving you hell huh?

Definitely look into the cam. Sounds like it's a tooth or two off. Timing light and TDC would definitely put you on the right path!

Hope this helps Shirley Manson, lol!

Re: Why is it running so rough?

Ha I know, it's been too long

Ya I was thinking it could be timing but my mechanic never checked it, the fact that it has so little milage and I got the timing belt changed which made no difference makes him think it couldn't be that but I know for a fact that the guy who did it just marked the old timing belt and put in the new one so if the old one was wrong he'd have put the new one on wrong. I think I'll get my mechanic to check it anyways though.

I'm working stupid hours for the next week so won't get much done but if you think of anything else to check let me know and we can do it all late next week when I'm off again.

Major rep for whoever fixes it!
