Balancer shaft gear...exit stage left

First off, my mechanic is still my mechanic. I've known Jason for a couple years now, go to church with him, supplied material for his house to him, he's worked on the 'lude multiple times, my truck a couple, and every person that I have sent to him loves him...so by no means is this a OMG STUPID MECHANIC post. This is more of a...did you know that if this happens...

So long story...long: crankshaft seal and oil pump seal were leaking (PITA), and I dont have the time/patience to mess with it (and an honest guy is trying to make a living). I pick up the car last night and feel a "wwhhaa-wwhhaa" vibration in the gas pedal when I leave, but hey, its been a week since I drove the car...new seals...whatever...

This morning the vibration is a little more noticeable, even at idle. I pull into the parking lot at work and it sounds like I have a broken supercharger under the hood (hint: I'm N/A). So I turn off the motor, pull the hood pins, pop the hood, and immediately I see a gear sitting atop my outer crankshaft pulley, just under the PS belt..."that can't be good" I think. After burning my fingers on it the first time, I go into work, grab a pair of needlenoses and "operation" that bad boy out of there.

Well, guess its obvious what it is by the thread title, so I'm like WTF? I call Jason, he's beside himself...sends a tow-truck. I stop by his shop at lunch, and he's like a beat puppy dog, still haven't gotten it all apart yet, but we notice that the gear actually drilled a hole through the lower timing belt cover to relocate itself where it was! Jason says, "I got nothing, I know I put lok-tite on that bolt, there it is fresh", he points to the hole and sure enough you can see it on the internal threads. But he's not one to try to dodge any responsibility and says, "I'm sooo sorry man, I'll tear it all down and rebuild it to make sure everything is good", meaning the front of my motor, "with any luck I'll have it done this evening".

Well, its gonna be tomorrow because he couldn't get a new cover 'til the morning, but it's all good.

How did I get so lucky that the balancer shaft belt, bolt, cap, or gear didnt do any major damage to my motor?!?! I mean, one or two teeth jump on that timing belt, and good night....wow.

I'll get pics of the old cover and the custom drilled BS access hole tomorrow! Just needed to share with somebody.

wow that's very VERY intriguing/interesting/lucky!!!
so was the BS belt just like whipping around inside the cover??

but it still backed out, despite the loktite?? wow. that's scary. maybe the wrong loktite? not bashing your mechanic or anything, just curious.

Re: Balancer shaft gear...exit stage left

Yeah, you can see where the belt was burning through the cover too...scary.
Yeah, he swears he torqued it down right, etc, etc, but fully admits it was his fault and made right on it. Not only did he replace the cover/gear/belt, but also replaced the balancer shaft seals and my crank seal (again) on his dime. He was really afraid they might have been compromised.
Yep, belt was just floppin' around in there, lucky it didn't get hung up in my timing belt, or that gear didn't do some serious damage inside or outside the cover.
All is well now and she's runnin' like a champ!
