Icon14 SH DRIVER on maintaining your air conditioner

I got this idea the other night from Goss's Garage on the program Motor Week. You can improve the performance of your ac system by cleaning your condenser using engine cleaner. After viewing the show, I went out to the garage to look at my ac condenser and it was ""totally"" black. After using one can of Gunk engine cleaner and a hose ,this is what my condenser looks like now.

The improvement in my ac system in my 99 Prelude was quite noticeable.
The air is now coming out much colder.
Having a more efficient ac system means that the necessary, ac compressor on time is reduced which frees up desperately needed hp on very hot days right when your engine is putting out less then its rated hp do to lower air density at high temperatures. I would recommend anyone who has not ever cleaned their ac condenser to do it.I know from looking at others cars as well as my own, that this is an aspect of auto maintenance thats totally over looked by many of us.

Lol. My prelude won't have a/c until I charge it but it's good to know for my accord. I'm just missing PS and cruise in my prelude.

Re: SH DRIVER on maintaining your air conditioner

great post. I actually have a sprayer and chemicals that are paint and aluminum safe, that are made specifically for the cleaning of ac coils. It's a better method, but not everyone has this stuff.

how good does that gunk engine cleaner work? never used it before myself....do you just spray it on then rinse it off? or do u need to get something to scrub the surface. like i looked at the picture up there and noticed that its super clean....must have done some scrubbing lol

I wouldn't scrub a radiator or condenser, you'll most likely bend the aluminum fins.

If you don't get good results with this product, try a second treatment.

What's an "air conditioner?" Is that shaving all the hair off your body then rocking the windows down non stop? Because that works for me

I've only used the ac in my lude 3 times in 10 years.... I should delete it and pretty up my engine bay, but I can't bring myself to do it.

I love/hate having my ac. It's nice though when you live in Oklahoma and have had 2 straight weeks of above 100 degree weather..

I'm curious as to how you did this...did you take the front bumper off? What's the best/easiest way to go about this?

Re: SH DRIVER on maintaining your air conditioner

You don't have to clean it perfectly to make a big difference so actually removing the condenser is not necessary. You just spray some Gunk engine cleaner on the input side of the condenser coil because thats where the dirt gets stuck where the air is being drawn in at.After a minute of soaking, you take a garden hose with a narrow spray attachment on it and blast the dirt away by spraying the water as horizontally as possible, when possible through every part of the condenser coil you can get to.As you do it ,you will see water coming out the other side of the condenser coil and heading toward the radiator which tells you its being cleaned all the way through. When using the sprayer on the hose,be sure to not get to close to the condenser fins as you are spraying or you may bend some of the condenser plates that radiate the heat.If you think it necessary, spray a 2nd can of Gunk and repeat the process until you judge it to be as clean as you desire. Thats about it.

I would, but it would defeat the purpose of a fully functional digital climate control conversion.

Don't forget the door seals

Maintaining the rubber seals around the doors works to keep the cool in and the hot out of your car just like weatherstripping in a house.Maintaining the rubber door seals flexibility and ability to provide a good seal to the doors, requires that they be maintained regularly with a product like Armor all. Even door seals that have not been treated with a rubber product for a long time can benefit and have its flexibility and sealing properties restored using a product like Armorall.Be sure to fold down and spray some protector into the crack on the sides of the rubber seals. If the seals are not properly maintained, then the AC compressor will have to run more often robbing you of engine performance especially when driving around town .Also, don't forget to treat the seals in the engine compartment and the trunk because they prevent the hood and trunk from rattling.

Icon12 SH DRIVER thinks out of the box

I am busy checking out a potential enhancement I have made to my 5th gen Preludes ac system that I hope will increase the ac's efficiency and better enable my car to create an environment that makes my competitors sweat with out having me break a sweat. This problem of ac drag on my cars engine has always irritated me especially back when I drove a 70hp Accord and an 110hp Prelude. If this promising idea works out ,it will be the subject of my next thread. Stay tuned for more!
