Icon5 HONDA 5 CYL ENGINE

I was just wondering why you don't here much about the engine that was in the Acura VIGOR . Was it a crappy engine or what. If not it seems to me that it would have been interesting if someone had put that torque 2.5l,5cyl ,FWD engine into a Prelude.Does anyone out their have any information on this subject.I am just curious.

Re: HONDA 5 CYL ENGINE

5 cylinder engines aren't all that. I had one in my Volvo 850. They feel like a 4 cylinder but without the thrashiness...but they aren't as torquey as 6 cylinders either. I never really liked them to be honest. Not many people do either. That's why they have been pretty much abandoned by many auto manufacturers. They also aren't as "balanced" as 6 or 4 bangers are. I dunno, i can't really explain it but driving a car with a 5 feels very weird; you can't rev it up to extract power because it has adequate torque, but not really...

Honda 5 bangers: Acura Vigor & Acura TL(1st gen) and that's all she wrote.

5 bangers are sooooooo 90s.

edit: the only true 5 banger i drool over is the Volvo 850/S70 T5. Now that car(properly tuned) can decimate a lot including Necks STI...i've seen it happen lol! <---not Necks personally.

Re: HONDA 5 CYL ENGINE

good save B

why do you think modern engines only come with an even amount of cylinders? the even amount of cylinders balance each other out.

still can't visualize it?
just imagine an inline 3 cylinder, two cylinders are at the top, and one at the bottom. now imagine that engine turning at 3,000rpms. now imagine it shaking itself to death.

Re: HONDA 5 CYL ENGINE

VW has a 2.5L 5 cyl in the new jetta. My chick has one and its a great little motor. They fixed the balance issue by adding a counter balance on the crank. And I know of at least 4 companies that produce them for the 2011 models. VW, Volvo, Ford, Chevy and Audi(still VW).

They give you the efficiency of a 4 with the power of a 6. I use 6 lightly.

Re: HONDA 5 CYL ENGINE

I think the front wheel drive and a longitudinally mounted engine killed the vigor's 5cly. Trans is mounted underneath the engine.

As a Volvo tech, I like the Volvo 5 cly, great engines. The B5254T2-R, has 295ft/lbs of torque at 1950-5250rpm.
The new I6 with turbo is ok, makes great power all over. But Volvo decided that the accessory had to be over the trans and thus developed the READ unit.

I hate stupid engineering.

Re: HONDA 5 CYL ENGINE

from a production stand point it doesn't make much sense for Honda to continue an I5 since it probably has to use a lot of proprietary engineering. Each cylinder fires at 72 degree intervals of the crank so you have to R&D a crank for it instead of being able to use wisdom of past motors built. The cheater way is like what they do in V10's which is basically using an off the shelf crank design and then using a balance shaft to make it fire at the correct intervals. Volvo is really the only car manufacturer who has bothered with building a lineup around the design so at this point it would cost them more to go back to an I4, especially now that they've just about perfected it.

Re: HONDA 5 CYL ENGINE

One cool thin about the 5cly, is that like in vw's case, they used the head from the lambo and just use different cams.

And Prelude enthusiasts think aftermarket support is bad for the Preludes...I don't think I've ever seen ANYTHING for the Vigors lol.

I've seen an nsx engine put in a crx down here...so anything is possible

Aren't 5 cylinders made for gas efficiency? Same as 3 cylinders like the geo metro? You'd um definitely need a welder lol
