Dilema

Okay, so I'm getting about $1000 shortly for some projects I've been working on. Now I have two options;
1. Buy an H22 (engine only) and swap it myself. My H23 has about 178K miles, idles rough due to EGR ports being clogged, and sounds like I need a valve adjustment.
2. Use the money for new axles, upgrade exhaust, fix oil leak, maybe straighten frame (depending on how out of spec it is), new balljoints, all new bushings, timing belt service, paint front bumper, and have some left over for some more upgrades.

I'm leaning towards H22 swap but not exactly sure. Which would you guys recommend?

Thanks.

Re: Dilema

$1,000 is not going to cover all that.

Trust me, I've said the same many times. It just never works out. Unless you mean $10,000, then yeah.

Re: Dilema

Good point. How about I change the question… Either an H22, or do as much maintenance to the drivetrain/suspension/chassis that $1,000 will get me?

Re: Dilema

I still don't see how $1,000 will buy an H22...but I'm sure you have something in mind.

It really depends on what you want to do. If you're afraid the engine is going to take a dump, then I'd replace it. But if it is healthy (good compression, low sludge, low wear) and all it needs is a EGR port clean and valve adjustment, then you might be better off doing the other stuff and riding out that motor for as long as possible.

Also keep in mind that depending on where you get it, the new engine might be worse than the old one. And I'm betting that $1,000 isn't going to buy a very reliable motor.

But in the end its up to you.

Tiger Japanese Auto Parts LTD - H22A OBD1 DOHC VTEC Engine only 92-95

$964 shipped to my door. I'll definitely have to do a compression test on the H23 before I make my decision.

I also forgot to mention that I'd probably save up another $500-700 before doing the swap for exhaust piping, fluids, etc.

Don't buy from Tiger Japanese. You are asking for trouble.

Re: Dilema

I've heard good things and bad things about tiger Japanese. If hmotors will sell an H22 without the transmission I'll go with them.

Re: Dilema

Im sure if you call hmotors they will sell you a h22 with no trans. You should call them up and see how much it would cost. Ive also heard both bad and good things from tigerjapanese.

But if I were in your scenario, I would probably go for the motor swap honestly. Have you thought about swapping in another h23 to save some money for other stuff? Idk, just a thought.

I'd rather stay away from swapping another H23 since it'd probably end up being around the same price, and I want VTAK!

Re: Dilema

Really I don't know how you couldn't put your dough towards option 2. To neglect suspension and proper frame alignment which both have to do with your safety as well as other for the sake of something as vain as VTEC seems a bit immature. Get the 'lude driving right then get it driving fast.

Re: Dilema

That's true. That's what I've been stuck on. But I also don't want my engine to die and leave me with a blown engine and no money.

Haha. Just quit last week until summer or I would. But I'll definitely make sure I do a compression test before anything.

Re: Dilema

i say option 2 for sure. try the Seafoam stuff, maybe that will help out a bit with your engine issues. but dont forget to change the oil directly after you use it. the first thing that i would do is get the frame right again, no questions asked.

Re: Dilema

I seafoam'd yesterday actually. And I'm not even sure if the frame is out of spec. I haven't noticed any difference in the way she handles at all. Just some very minuscule bumper/hood alignment issues.

Although, I'd be more than happy to take that H23 off your hands...

Sounds like my dad, but yeah. I agree, get your framed straightened, new fluids, and minor upgrades like exhaust. Remember, if it works and your not upgrading it, don't mess with it. You'll go asking for trouble. Alot more than what $1,000 can fix. Honda charges $85 bucks for a valve adjustment and tune up, its worth it to just go there and have it done right.

Except it's extremely irresponsible to forego important maintenance on serious safety portions of your vehicle (susp, frame) just to go a lil faster and hear "BWAAAAAA" from your "vtak". Vtec is overrated anyway.....

Your car will be more fun to drive with a straight frame and upgraded suspension components.

Nah, put money into my accord. I'll get another one next year, unless I go for the H motor and LSD tranny swap in my cb7. Lol
