Need advice on first prelude purchase

Hello, I'm hoping to get some advise on a prelude I'm thinking of buying. Il make this simple since I'm on my phone. 97 prelude sh with 105k miles. Says he can go down to $6300. New tires, cold air, catback. I took it for a test drive and it went well. I found 4 issues, paint is ok except fading on rear view and spoiler, and plenty of small scratches all around. It blew a little bit of black smoke on startup but subsided quickly, I only noticed because I was behind the car when he started it. Passenger door handle worked but didn't sit flush. Last it had a 5th gear syncro grind.

Just looking for general advise, if its a good or terrible deal. Thank you.

Re: Need advice on first prelude purchase

Nothing abnormal for that age. The black smoke is likely a bit of oil seeping through the valve seals at rest -- fairly common. You didn't say anything about fluid levels or leaks, brake pads, shocks, hoses -- all things that wear out or are indicators of how the car was maintained. Find out if/when the timing belt was replaced...if it wasn't, figure an immediate $1000 job (if you pay someone to do it) to replace the timing and balancer shaft belts, the accessory belts, and the water pump. As far as price, that's very dependent on region...best advice is to look up the private party prices in Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds, and survey the local ads.

Thanks for the info, there was no leaks and the timing belt was a very important question i forgot to ask.

Honestly I feel that he wants too much for it in its current shape, the syncro issue I feel would annoy me and $6.5k seems a bit much for a car that the paint is gone on.

Trying to stay patient and wait for the right one to come along, im pretty picky.

Yes definitely be patient. I looked for a few months, and bought the 4th and last I drove; a 1998 base model 150k for $4000 in CO. Prices may vary state to state, but look closely at each and good luck in your searches!
