Look normal to you?

So I took my valve cover off today so that I could replace the gasket that had started to leak a bit, to inspect my timing belt, and repaint the valve cover. This is what the head looks like @ 200k miles:

The timing belt looks to be in good shape, right?

Also, the groove in my VTEC lobe doesn't catch my fingernail.... but it doesn't look right.

Any input?

Re: Look normal to you?

What are you questioning the look of?
the scratch on the lobe isn't normal but if the motor is running fine I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm asking if the color of the inside of the head looks okay, and if the timing belt looks normal. I've never had to deal with timing belts before (nissan guy here).

As far as the lobe goes (and I don't know if others are like that as well), what would cause that?

Re: Look normal to you?

the lobe being scratched like that could be normal wear after all it does have 200000 miles on it,but it could also be caused by lack of lubrication or heat or valve lash. You said you had a leak so did your oil ever get low? If it gets worse you could get a new cam or try using a thicker/heavier oil as well or check the spacing (think valve job). but i wouldn't stress on it too much.

Timing belts will never look too much different unless they are shredded, just make sure you do not get any oil or coolant on the belt. The color inside the head is pretty normal it is just carbon buildup. And I would not worry about the lobes too much unless it gets much worse, it probably happened from improper lubing or maybe some medal shavings in the oil.

That buildup is nothing compared to my first 240sx. After sending the head to get reworked and hot dipped, it still had some burned crap at the bottom of the valleys lol. I thought the teeth might show a bit of wear or whatever. Guess not lol.

It was constantly low lol. I have a real love/hate relationship with my motor. She burns a bit here and there, leaks a bit here and there. I don't think lash is a real problem here being that the low profiles on the lobes looked fine, and it doesn't have that typical noisy Honda valvetrain sound either. My car is weird.

Re: Look normal to you?

Re: Look normal to you?

I need to install an oil pressure gauge. At 200k, the oil pump HAS to be nearing the end of it's lifespan, right?

Re: Look normal to you?

Really?

When I get around to doing the timing belt, I'll do the oil pump. But I'll probably be overhauling the entire engine at that point too lol.
